None. I got a bachelors of science, majoring in CGI, but considering going back for engineering. Cue the gay jokes, I know, but I want to design ROVs, submersibles, and habitats. Or electric cars/robots.

Imagine the stuff we're missing, simply because we can't send minisubs down longer than a few hours. That's why we need a new generation of deep sea (.5 - 2.5 miles down) research outposts. Simply by occupying areas of interest over longer periods we're more likely to discover the more elusive shit.

We don't get to choose what is true. We believe in what there is evidence for, and our belief is only ever as firm as the evidence is. Many concepts entertained in science today are supported by incomplete evidence, but we treat them accordingly. It's also why we treat the supernatural as if it doesn't exist, because as far as we can tell, it doesn't.

Shouldn't make a difference. Just get a deep water pump (8 feet limit) and place the habitat a good foot shy of that for safety. In fact it's unavoidable as the weight used for ballast will elevate it a ways off the bottom anyway and I doubt your aquarium is 8 feet or deeper.

I would love to see someone build their own little hamster colony in a giant aquarium.

Your work interests me for another reason though. My brother and I are working on building small self-sustaining houseboats for use on the ocean, and I'd kinda like to retire on one. Sometime after 2012 you'll be able to purchase a shallow water vacation home from the Atlantica Expeditions for around $35,000. It's one way they hope to mitigate the expense of their colonization efforts and, if it takes off, to raise money for the larger, deep water colony.

>>Are they building 'em near Florida?

Yeah, but they're trailerable. As in, towable by car like any boat. They use a solar powered air compressor on the buoy to fill up a backup bank of scuba tanks on the exterior which trickle feeds into the habitat. There's an active CO2 scrubber inside of a design I can't discuss due to a non disclosure agreement but I can say it's very safe and low maintinence.

Setting up would be as easy as putting it in the water via boat ramp, floating it to the desired site and flooding the ballast tanks.

The only real catch is it can be in water that is a maximum of 25 feet deep. This is so the hatch is approximately 21 feet deep or less, so the interior pressure is no greater than 1.6atm. This is the maximum pressure you can live at without your tissues saturating with nitrogen. This means you can freely swim to and from the surface without decompressing.

Lastly, if you can talk someone else into buying one, they can be docked to form a larger habitat like so.

the 25 foot limit might make it harder to find a site to set it, but I can think of a few places around Florida or even the Bahamas that are shallow, flat, and out of the way of boat traffic.

I've got a few years to sell the wife on the idea. previously I was trying to get her to buy a private submarine, this seems far cheaper and more practical. About the cheapest oceanfront property she'll ever find. I'm off for now, thanks for the info!
