Because the Mayans based their calendar off of astronomical observations, and they arbitrarily stopped making the calendar in 2012. Also the Mayan calendar doesn't end it is just the end of this current cycle.

There was more than one Mayan calendar. Many of the larger Mayan cities had their own calendar. Not all of them ended in 2012.
The end of a calendar does not mean the end of the world. It just starts over, just like we do every year.
