So, /sci/, I'm thinking of applying to become a janitor for this board. I know this isn't completely /sci/ related, and the rules will regulate what I can and cannot delete (if I become a janitor), but what does /sci/ consider "deletion worthy" posts?
SO cash threads?
Homework threads (more advanced math such as calculus)?
Carl Sagan threads?
Greentext stories?
Etcetera.

Pic related, SCIENCE!

>> No.2382584

Delete religion threads. Obvious one there.

>> No.2382593

Delete homework threads.

>> No.2382595

What's SO cash?
And homework/carl sagan threads are okay as they usually end up starting a discussion or at least educating someone. And they don't happen too often.

>> No.2382615

People need to learn to use a filter, hide threads they don't care about.

Delete rule-breaking content.

SO cash threads are the ones where they post John and his bitch, then he goes on about how we're pathetic, and says something than SO cash.

Some are entertaining.

>> No.2382644

Some homework threads should be acceptable. When it is university level and the reason OP is confused is that their prof is giving them bad instructions they are worthy of responses.

What the fuck people, there's no need to delete homework threads as long as OP shows a fucking attempt. If, however, it's a 16 year old child with DO MATH /sci/ then you may delete.

no one gives a fuck about sagan, cash, homework, and even occasionaly insightfull religious threads (when their implications are of course related to /sci/ence)

janitors dont have much power, but i am thinking i will also apply (i'm on here often enough, i may as well make the board a bit better while i'm at it, if they accept me)

you will have to follow the rules to the letter, personal opinion cant come into it at all.
so you can ONLY delete homework threads, and religion threads
religion threads are often enough, but for homework threads, suspecting it as being homework isnt enough.
if the OP actually states "i got this to do for homework..." or some shit like that, then they are absolutely fucking retarded, and you may delete the thread.
obviously you enforce the global rules as well, and i think you are allowed to delete anything that is clearly not science related as well (seeing as it is on the wrong board)

>> No.2382693

It would not be up to you what fucking threads to delete. You would delete all threads that violate the rules, and no others.

>> No.2382696

I'll be applying as well. Hopefully somebody gets in and can make it at least a little better.

>> No.2382698

The rules do not outlaw religion. They outlaw "religion vs science" threads. There's a difference. Philosophy in general can be considered a science, and threads discussing aspects of philosophy do not necessarily break the rules.

but posting a religion thread on a /sci/ence board is pretty much guaranteed to turn it into a science vs religion thread.
religion has nothing to do with science, because faith is diametrically opposed to evidence, and evidence is vital for the advancement of good science.
also, im pretty sure M00T is gonna make a philosophy board (and philosophy isnt science, so it doesnt belong here)

..if it isnt science or maths related, it should get deleted, as OP has posted on the wrong board.

OP, if you become a janitor, you should delete only posts that are breaking the rules:
http://www.4chan.org/rules#sci

>SO cash threads?
No, doesn't break rules.

>Homework threads (more advanced math such as calculus)?
Yes, breaks rules. Also, lol @ considering a freshman-level math class "advanced".

>Carl Sagan threads?
No, doesn't break rules.

>Greentext stories?
No, doesn't break rules.

neither do i, however, it is not our place do decide.

mods=gods,
if homework threads are against the rules here, they will be deleted. janitors will have to do their jobs properly, regardless of how they feel, or they will not be janitors for long.

>> No.2382788

I'm also going to be applying, anon. Good luck to you.

Blatantly off-topic crap:

-Religion or philosophy threads, especially uncreative ones, especially ones that aren't even thinly tied into science.

example: "God is real. Prove me wrong."

-Wacky technology troll images, especially ones we've seen before.

example: picture of coolface.jpg going the speed of light in a bathtub while shining a flashlight

-Homework threads, especially those where the OP has provided none of his work. Like I'm going to waste five minutes helping someone who's spent thirty seconds on the problem.

example: "test is tomorrow, solve this integral for me, /sci/"

And one type of thread I hate, but I would have to grin and bear, since it's vaguely on-topic:

-IQ threads.

>> No.2382823

>example: "God is real. Prove me wrong."
Also: "My mother wants to send me to church. How do I convince her that God isn't real?"

These usually just turn into threads full of funny troll-physics images. There's nothing wrong with that.

OP. If you don't even understand the rules, let alone have the willpower to look them up on the home page and read them from the get-go, you should NOT be a janitor.

You shouldn't even be applying at this point if you wouldn't know what to delete. What a janitor deletes is not subjective, it's objective.

You know, if you're interested in taking out the trash, you can do so right now by installing Greasemonkey and the 4watch userscript:

https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/748
http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/63092

4watch hides the threads and posts other people have reported, and optionally reports the rule-breaking ones to the real mods.

It was first used on /s/ back in the pre-CAPTCHA days when half the page was spam. The janitors did their job, but there just weren't enough of them. Maybe moot will take on enough janitors for round-the-clock cleanup this time, but I wouldn't count on it.

>> No.2382869

>I won't take a hard line on troll physics.

oh thank you so much!
...oh wait.
have you not read the thread?
you dont get a fucking choice whether to be 'hard line' or not.
you have to enforce the rules, all the rules, and nothing but the rules.
troll physics doesnt break the rules (and often sparks interesting scientific discussion)
so if you delete these posts, it will be logged against you as a janitor that you deleted them, it will become apparent that the rules wern't breached, and you lose the status of janitor for abusing you're power

mm-kay?

Hey butthurt wannabe scientist...
>Science (from the Latin scientia, meaning "knowledge") is, in its broadest sense, any systematic knowledge-base or prescriptive practice that is capable of resulting in a correct prediction, or reliably-predictable type of outcome. ...
Engineers do that. And we learn as much science as any natural science area.
