>Belteguse about to go supernova
>May become a second sun for a few weeks

what do we think?
likely?
possible?
probably won't happen?

It would be a legendary sight, though

>> No.2380310

hopefully it happens on dec. 21 2012 so that all of the new age faggots shit their pants

>> No.2380313

it's likely to: Not happen.

Seriously what the fuck happened to this board? Why doesn't anyone on here know shit about science?

>> No.2380315

it will not release that much energy.

>> No.2380323

events outside our solar system being like a 2nd sun is most likely never going to happen in all of time. they will either be minute or destroy us completely with their energy. 2nd sun? not likely

>> No.2380332

not this shit again.

you will not live long enough to see that.

>Addendum: NEWS.com.au would like to apologise for their error - as we all know, Betelgeuse is the second biggest star in the Orion constellation, not the universe.

PFFFFFFFTAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA THIS WHOLE ARTICLE.

They have to be trolling right?

..........right?

This is old fucking news and news.com.au is doing it's regular beat up a non story into a story to troll gullible Australian fuckweeds who probably vote for the liberal party.

Betelgeuse is expected to go supernova 'within the next million years' which means any time between tomorow and a million years from now. Someone at news is just playing funny buggers. We wouldn;t even see the light until 2019 if it went tomorow anyway, seing it is 8 light years or so away

>> No.2380496

>>2380484
It's actually anywhere between 300-700 lightyears, and the supernova could have already happened, it's just a matter of when the light reaches us, we have no idea what's happening to it right now, only what we can gather from its 300 year old light.

>> No.2380502

>>2380496

you're right, I don't know why i thought it was only 8

>> No.2380514

By the way, to an astronomer, 'about to go supernova' means less than 10000 years.
So in the next 10000 years.

>> No.2380755

It will under go a type 2 supernova explosion, this means its core will collapse in on itself. It life ends within the next 1 million years.

>> No.2380993

The largest star so far discovered is VY Canis Majoris that belongs to the Hypergiant class.

>> No.2381009

>>2380514
The infamous red super-giant star in Orion’s nebula - Betelgeuse - is predicted to go gangbusters and the impending super-nova may reach Earth before 2012

>> No.2381027

better subscribe to the Supernova Early Warning System

http://snews.bnl.gov/

note that they can also send testing messages, so read the instructions well

>> No.2381038

>>2381009
Or it may reach earth before 3012
Astronomy is not accurate to within even 100 years.
It's like predicting volcano or earthquakes.

> Astronomy is not accurate to within even 100 years

That depends on the actual object/subject in study. You're putting too much on the same bag.

>> No.2381227

Betelgeuse will go supernova in a million years time.
