Emotions, why the fuck do we have them?

Feeling sad fucking sucks.

>> No.2358771

Is that a serious question?
Emotions are as necessary as pain to survive.

Spock clearly had emotions and at times struggled to suppress the display of them.

Reason can't set goals, it can only tell you about means of achieving them.

Vulcans weren't devoid of emotion. They actually were too passionate which is why they decided they needed to control their emotions with logic.

The part of the brain responsible for fear and emotions is the amygdala
I think it'd be possible to get rid of it by nailing and ice pick through your mouth.

You're right but it doesn't apply to all situations

Emotions are how your selfish genes try to get you to behave in an evolutionary manner.

Theey are responsible for the illusion of a purpose/meaning to life.

> Emotions, why the fuck do we have them?

Regarding unpleasant emotions - you have them because you desire things. If you had no desires, then your expectations would always be met, and you would have no reason to feel bad.

No, not in the relationship type of way, cause no relationship exists. But looking at and thinking about attractive porn stars is pleasurable. So is jacking off. Pleasure = emotion.

Jacking off to porn stars involves emotion - some people call this emotion lust..

when i fap i call the feeling "β-endorphin".
When i feel motivated i say to myself "hmmm this is a decent dopamine release i'm experiencing"
When i look into my girl's eyes i'm like "right now. oxytocin!"
When i feel protective of her i go "fuck yeah, vasopressin!"

Drugs could do this to you one day. Stay in school.

That will just get rid of fear, not of most other emotions.
There was a recent case where a woman suffered some disease which essentially destroyed her amygdala but didn't affect the rest of her brain. When she was young she felt fear, but as the disease progressed, she merely lost the sense of fear. She could still feel all the other emotions, she just had no sense of fear, even if she understood the concept and could model it in her mind, she just lacked this feeling, however she could remember the memories containing it from her childhood. It seems that in her social life lacking fear has led her in quite a few dangerous situations where she could not fear for her life even if someone was threatening to kill or harm her. Her lack of fear made her lead a more abusive life as she did not understand the cues meant to inspire fear from her fellow humans she interacted with.

Other emotions such as love/sexual attraction/hate/etc are a byproduct of the reward system, hypothalamus and some other specialized circuits. Other "complex" emotions are probably more or less completly emulated by the neocortex with only some cues from the other parts of the brain. You can thank our ancient reptilian ancestors for most of these emotions as mamalians mostly just had more variations in the cortex (actual memory and the source of mammalian intelligence and eventually human intelligence). Fear triggered the fight-or-flight reponse in those early animals which was a good hardcoded strategy for survival, and it still stays with us. It may not be as important for humans, but in the very few cases that are known to be fearless (amygdala damage), those people tend to lead less cautious lifes than those with fear.

for this question not to be totally stupid.... im going to read it as not "why do we have emotions" but "why do we have negative emotions. we seek things that make us happy, avoid things that make us sad. the anthropological reason why we avoid things that make us sad is because these same things decrease out chances of survival. but a lot of the things that would have decreased our chances of survival and of passing on our genes in the past may not inhibit us now. you can get sperm from a bank, so you dont need to be devastated every time a romantic partner regects you, for instance. once we had a need for negative emotions. but do we still? probably, yeah. but its still a better question then the one that started this thread.

So stop feeling sad.

Quit telling yourself it isn't that simple, it is.
Stop feeling sad and sorry for you situation and fix it.
If there's nothing you can do about the situation then there is no reason to feel sad about it.

Either way, move on and do something fun.
