Q: What is the Voluntary Human Extinction Movement?

VHEMT (pronounced vehement) is a movement not an organization. It’s a movement advanced by people who care about life on planet Earth. We’re not just a bunch of misanthropes and anti-social, Malthusian misfits, taking morbid delight whenever disaster strikes humans. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Voluntary human extinction is the humanitarian alternative to human disasters.

We don’t carry on about how the human race has shown itself to be a greedy, amoral parasite on the once-healthy face of this planet. That type of negativity offers no solution to the inexorable horrors which human activity is causing.

Rather, The Movement presents an encouraging alternative to the callous exploitation and wholesale destruction of Earth’s ecology.

As VHEMT Volunteers know, the hopeful alternative to the extinction of millions of species of plants and animals is the voluntary extinction of one species: Homo sapiens... us.

Each time another one of us decides to not add another one of us to the burgeoning billions already squatting on this ravaged planet, another ray of hope shines through the gloom.

When every human chooses to stop breeding, Earth’s biosphere will be allowed to return to its former glory, and all remaining creatures will be free to live, die, evolve (if they believe in evolution), and will perhaps pass away, as so many of Nature’s “experiments” have done throughout the eons.

It’s going to take all of us going.

Anyone who thinks there isn't enough habitable space on the Earth for the human population has too much space in their head.

For starters, you can fit all of the world's population in the state of Texas and everyone would get one acre of land.

Secondly, it has been long established (by the UN no less) that developed countries have an average birth rate of 1.6 children per year, which (if allowed to continue) would see a DECLINE in the Earth's population, after peaking at around 9 billion.

And that's if none of the less developed countries develop.

North America is 9,540,000 sq mi, so at 6,105,600,000 acres, we couldn't fit all humans here. Of course, Asia has 17,212,000 sq mi., so 11,015,680,000 acres. Plenty of room there. Hell, we could have an acre and a half, and still have plenty of room for growth.

Of course, we'd still be displacing all of the animals from Asia...

Sterilizing the planet is orders of magnitude more difficult than exterminating human life. We might be able to do the latter with only a significant minority actively participating at first, but we're nowhere close being able to do the former, even if everyone in the world were on board for a century.

Also, destroying the planet as a celestial body is many orders of magnitude harder still. If I recall, obliterating the planet so nothing is left, for instance, would require a 50,000 exaton blast to overcome Earth's gravitational binding energy.
