I have an aluminum yo-yo that I want to be tarnished. Is there a way to speed up the reaction? I don't want to anodize it, I just want a uglyish dark gray patina on it.

smear a bit of metalic mercury on it. mercury oxidizes aluminum nicely.

This, however, make lay the yo-yo onto its side, and make sure the mercury is on top, so that gravity is pulling it downward.

You will get a nice spot in the morning.
