Alright /sci/tards, let's get some info up in hurr.

Why did you choose the field you are in (and I'm not talking to the damn high school kids on here).

Me: I've got an undergrad in Mechanical Engineering and I chose that as I've always wanted to be involved in car design. After graduating, I went on to do a Masters in Aerospace Engineering (which I'm finishing now) and I did so because I love aerodynamics and as a topic, it's hugely interesting...I mean, its rocket science and shit.

Go.

>> No.2347096

Pfft, Aerospace Engineering isn't that impressive. It's not brain surgery or anything.

I'm still a physics undergrad. I'm going to low temperature / helium physics in a few months. I don't really know why, I just fell for it.

I'm doing Aerospace engineering , and it's actually a pain in the ass most of the time.
Basically a shitload of maths physics and fluid mechanics everywhere.
Actually during de first 2 years you'll rarely see or touch anything that flies or is supposed to.
And it's much more air than space oriented most of the time.
(at least where I'm studying)

As you might notice I'm a bit disappointed with the career, but it might have something to do with the fact I just came home after a fucking 4,5 h semestral exam.

Speaking to the undergrads in my department, yeah, they seem to not be having the most fun. I think doing it as a post-grad course was a wise choice for me. I'm immediately in with stuff that flies and stuff that goes in to space (It's about 60:40 on aero compared to space stuff).

I'm SUPPOSED to be studying for a Space Dynamics exam but here I am. Heh.

Biology and psychology undergrad, intending to go into neuropsychology/neuroscience. I chose this path because our tools determine what we can observe, and there is no tool more core to the human experience than the mind. Therefore the study of the mind serves all sciences.

I couldn't decide between mechanical and electrical engineering so I picked electrical, but then two years later i switched to mechanical. Still graduated in 4 years though. Now I'm doing a master's degree in control systems, and I have a job lined up developing software (virtually none of the positions available for MechEs seem interesting to me. I'm not very handy and don't like building shit, which most engineers are/do).

In short, I have no goals in life and just do shit that seems interesting at the time. feelsokman.jpg

Yeah a little. There were some interesting classes but overall I think I find electrical engineering more interesting. That's probably part of why I'm drawn back to control systems/mechatronics type stuff.

>>2347441
Eh it's not so bad. I think it's really cool how entire systems can be stabilized/controlled using some linear algebra/calc that's not necessarily immediately intuitive.

Do you mean as in research wise?

>> No.2347480

>>2347463
Well, research obviously needs to come first, but I think if we can find a way to change human DNA for the better then we should go for it. As for becoming a cyborg, yes, but we have nowhere near the tech right now. Synthetic protein and gene development is an exciting but young field and I would love to find ways to improve human lifespan and intelligence, if it's possible.

Masters student btw

I majored in Civil engineering but was luckily to have a friend land me a gig at one of the Valley movie studios doing facilities management. I can not imagine being surrounded by nerds or actually being a civil engineer.

If you're calling them liars as if they're making up their field then fair enough but if you are because they aren't claiming to be in it for the money then you can eat a bag of dicks 'cause I'm definitely not. If I wanted epic amount of monies I'd be in banking/economics or some shit like that. Or in Petroleum Engineering.

I'm currently a janitorial contractor in industry, a couple years back a client offered to send me back to school to get an EE degree. In return I had to sign a contract to work for them 4 years at 65k/per.

I didn't tell them that I make 2-3 times that as a business owner, and have 10-14 people working for me at any given time, none of whom makes that little.

I just thanked them and turned the position down.

I got into the art field on a CETA grant. It was a program during the Carter administration to help get /b/tards to work. I was an apprentice potter for 18 months at a working pottery/gallery. I then apprentice for another 18 months with a sculptor. It fooled me into thinking I could make a liing at art. I've worked in the fine art field ever since. 30+ years now....

BS/MS, current phd student in aerospace engineering.

1) originally cause it's rocket science and shit and sounded impressive
2) continued because it's actually impressive, but if you don't have a phd you suck and fuck you. it's fun knowing more pure math than mathematicians while knowing all the applicability of real engineering.

Net, yes. Sometimes I earn less than my operations manager, since I just handle a sale or two a year and that guy works or sits in class for ~60 hours/week.

I gross far more than all of my crew put together of course... and my business pays for my time here among other little perks. Cash-flow is better than salary alone, because my salary is taxed, while mostly my vehicles, vacations, supplies, equipment and home office are not.

After reading the thread, I feel like I could contribute a little bit more. I chose chemical engineering because making a substance (molecule) into another has always sounded like fucking magic to me.

I'm starting uni next year. I've already done one orgo chemistry class. What should I expect? Which classes are hardest and how to prepare for them?
