Pic related. They cover Lloyd Godson's homemade undersea habitats, and will showcase the 80% complete Leviathan habitat (comprised of two basic housing modules docked end to end) to be tested in a 2012 mission deep in the Atlantic ocean.

Incidentally, because of the Hampture project, I have been selected to participate in that mission. I will be one of 52 people (All of whom I feel are much more deserving) to spend 24 hours aboard the habitat performing an experiment of my own design.

I have a couple ideas as to what that experiment might be, and would welcome any input you guys could offer.

Great success. Check it out:

Now I'm building a bigger habitat with 4 rooms, an exercise wheel and a small clover farm. That's taken a back seat to the Earth Rover project for the time being however, on account of the cold weather.

Hey thanks. But now I need to figure out how to top that for the 2012 mission.

I was thinking of prototyping a magnetic-fastening, waterproof inductive charging plug. Something that would let you charge up a diesel-electric submarine's batteries as it rests next to the colony, rather than having to run its generators on the surface to charge them as is typically done.

Since they plan to use their submarine as a sort of transit service between the colony and shore, being able to charge this way to make repetitive short (24 mile) round trips (with perhaps 8 hours in between) would save them a lot on fuel.

Inductive charging has terrible efficiency, so your power plant needs to be much larger accordingly.

>> No.2329399

>>2329354

Inductive charging is terribly inefficient at sending power over any sort of distance, yeah. But I'm talking about a waterproof plug that doesn't actually make metal to metal contact. That prevents shorts, and corrosion due to sea water exposure. The plug contains one half of an induction coil system, and the socket contains the other half. When mated, the two are very very closed (millimeters) to mitigate transmission losses as much as possible.

This is also necessary because as inefficient as induction is in the air, it's abysmal in the water. Radiation doesn't go far at all in water which is why robotic deep sea probes use fiber optic control cables instead of radio signals to communicate with the topside control station.

So the design will need to get the coils as close together as possible, while squeezing any water between the contact area out of the way. It's not perfect but the alternative is surfacing every time you need to charge and hoping it doesn't rain.

What's stopping you from docking and then making a physical connection through the sealed docking connection?

Actually, got an electric toothbrush? Same basic idea. Except this will have to handle much higher voltage/amperage, and it will use magnets to hold the plug in place.

Nothing, for subs large enough to dock. But that's just the DST-II. There will be other, smaller, personal submersibles like the ones pictured that won't be able to dock and won't have a moon pool to surface in. Colonists who want such vehicles (because they are affordable; the one pictured is $7,500, or about the price of a good used car) will need a way to charge them without bringing them inside.

Ideally the same standard could be used for all colonists' submersibles so that they could all use the same charging stations.
