Conditioned inhibition is not the symmetrical opposite of conditioned excitation: A test of the Rescorla-Wagner model
Rescorla and Wagner's (1972) linear associative model of learning predicts that a neutral stimulus will become weakly excitatory if it is paired with a conditioned inhibitor and the compound is not reinforced. If the inhibitor is not allowed to extinguish during these pairings, the model predicts that the neutral stimulus will become strongly excitatory. Rescorla (1971) has presented some evidence to support the former prediction of a weak effect. Experiment I tested the latter prediction of a strong effect using rats in a conditioned emotional response paradigm, and found no evidence that the pairings made the neutral stimulus excitatory. Experiment II replicated Rescorla's results, but showed that even on a relearning test the experimental group learned no faster than a novel stimulus control group.

No. There's no rule for this. You think you're providing a "symmetrical" opposite but there's no metric you could go by where imagination is the reverse of knowledge.

Instead, you could say that they're opposite methods to tackle a problem, but you would have to rephrase it to "LINEARITY:LATERALITY"

Surely being a coward is having lack of courage.
And I don't see how fear is an opposite of interest.

You're the one who chose the words. It's not my problem if they have nuanced meaning without antonyms or quantifiable and reversible function.

The only one remotely objective is ONE:ALL but it would have to be rephrased into something like FOCUS:DIFFUSION/EXPANSION and be among a group of similarly reversible quantifiable actions.

Yes. Being a coward is lack of courage. I don't see how this NOT the opposite of courage, just as order was the opposite of chaos Perhaps interest was a poor example, as it's only the opposite of a certain type of fear; the fear of unknown. I correct my statement to FEAR: FEARLESSNESS

Being a coward does not mean that you lack courage. Judging by that aspect I could say that being courageous means that you lack fear.

I can see what you mean by being able to do something even if you're afraid of it, but could you just accept the general, well-established and logical definition that the opposite of courage is cowardice?

Then it's just semantics. Words are defined by convention, which is fairly arbitrary. But ignoring the meanings they depict because just because they are associated with the words only by convection is vacuous.

YOU CAN HAVE FEAR AND STILL HAVE COURAGE. IN FACT ITS IN THE FACE OF FEAR THAT PEOPLE ARE COURAGEOUS. IF THERE WAS NOTHING TO BE AFRAID OF THEN WTF ARE YOU BEING COURAGEOUS AGAINST. NOTHING! BECAUSE ANYONE WOULD DO IT.
ARE YOU COURAGEOUS WHEN YOU'RE FIGHTING A LION? YES. DOESN'T MEAN YOU AIN'T AFRAID. HOW ABOUT WHEN FIGHTING AN ANT? YOU'RE PROBS ...FEARLESS. RAAAAH

I think that there is a difference between opposites based on "something" and then "not that something"

like, courage is the opposite of cowardice because you are not afraid. But it's not this "symmetrical opposite" dealio because it's still in the same ballpark. Courage and cowardice are on opposite ends of a spectrum of fear, or something. However another kind of opposite would be something that is completely different. As OP put it, symmetrically opposite.

In the example of courage v wisdom I think it is something like... courage is the ability to do something without fear, as I saw it defined earlier in this thread. Wisdom is an understanding of things.

Here wait, I'll try this. You have four dudes. One dude is a mighty warrior with great courage and never runs from a battle. Another is a cowardly thief who only steals from blind old ladies. The next is a wise scholar who understands many things about the universe. The last is an idiot who doesn't understand anything and needs to be held by the hand through life.

The Wise man and the Idiot are opposites in the spectrum of Wisdom. The Warrior and the Thief are opposites in the spectrum of Courage.

However, the Wise man and the Warrior are also opposites in that the Warrior makes decisions based on rashness, while the Wise man makes decisions based on reasoning. The Idiot, well he doesn't make decisions, but the Thief is his opposite as well because he makes decisions based on his fear.

I kind of understand how Wisdom and Courage can be opposites now, but as OP is a faggot, I don't think I'll get an actual elaboration.

As though this were a good metric.

You still can't define the "symmetric opposite". So far, all it means that it isn't the "opposite" within an ideological spectrum, but something "totally different".

Hence, your arbitrary word games.

>ONE : ALL
This shit drives me crazy because "one" and "all" are not symmetrical opposites. "All" is a form of "oneness". The symmetrical opposite of "one" is "none" or "incompleteness" or something.
