Guise, I need your honest opinion. I'm going to college next year, and I can't decide what I want to do with my life. I know that I want to major in a science, but can't decide between being a doctor or a physicist.

If I major in pre-med, I'll have an assured job, and will be set for life. But if I major in Astrophysics, which is my ultimate passion, it would be very hard to find a job. I would plan on getting a PhD afterwards.

What do you guys think? Should I take a chance and follow my passion (astrophysics), or be safe and become a doctor?

Thanks.

Follow your passion, OP.

You can't major in pre-med, newfag.

You can't "be safe" trying to apply to med school. I TA human anatomy and every stupid fucker is "pre-med".

In all probability, there is a >90% chance you won't get into med school.

Also, you're still in high school; you can't talk science here because there is no science conducted in high school, just learning about what others have done.

Sage for good luck.

I went to a cooking school. A surprisingly large portion of the students were 30-40 year olds who had previously been computer programmers.

astrophysics dude. im in same situation. but im going into astrophysics, biology, or mathematics. i promised to myself i will dedicate my life to raising science from the weakened state its in caused by superstition and religion. i know i will probably life in an apartment with hotpockets but its for science and thats all that matters. don't become a sellout.

uhhhh... i dont know why people feel the need to be such faggots... i mean what stick does this guy have up his ass

anyhow i would probably go with the pre-med because being a doctor isnt really bad or anything. and astrophysics is gonna be frustrating if you never find a job.

also my captcha has the word 'Mycorrhiza' in it, suggesting you lean towards the bio side of things, so yeah premed

Like science? Hating teaching? Try engineering!

Bull. Shit.

I faced the same dilemma when I was in high school. I was deciding between becoming an epidemiologist and a physicist. Having interned at a health related research laboratory, I had a pretty good chance at going to med school, but I'm still majoring in Physics in my third year. Now, I've decided to just go for a Ph.D in physics and do more research related to biophysics/medicine.

My advice is that you shouldn't even worry about it if you're just going to college. You're idea of what a career path is like quickly changes when you're shown it face-to-face. Also, don't think that any career is harder than the other. They all have their difficult and time consuming tasks and each one takes a fair amount of hard work.

doctor, because we need more fucking specialists.

actually it's more of the faulty system than lack of doctors, but there's never an overabundance of doctors!

if only all those unemployed waiters with finance or physics or math degrees became doctors instead... hell even engineers are being screwed over. hell awaits in the after college. even those most dedicated interns are fucked. you think you've wasted your time participating in 4chan instead of learning science- well you're going to waste even more time doing tedious lab work or searching for a job. in the end we all waste time...

(you should really look into systems biology though. just cross your fingers that you don't get stuck doing professor shit work only to end up empty handed and probably as a high school teacher in a school full of kids with various mental problems)

You're dumb. Also, enjoy getting laid once with a really drunk chick.

I can see that, they'd have made enough money to be able to securely look for a new job and they're burned out after years of staring at code 60 hours a week.

Step 1. double major

Step 2. Acquire PhD & MD

Step 3. FUCK YEAH

Step 4. ?????

Step 5. Profit!

But what are some jobs that I could get into after getting a PhD? Nasa? Professor? How hard is that to become?

I feel the exact same way, I'm a senior in high school torn between pre-med and physics. Good luck to you OP!

You can't major in pre-med...

When you are choose to go pre-med, you pick whatever major you want to do. Then while pursuing that major you take certain classes you need for MCATs and medical school in general. But there are certain colleges that incorporate undergrad with MD, I can't think of any at the top of my head though.

OP here. I lol'd when I came to /sci/ to see my thread bumped from 2 hours ago

It's kinda early in the game to know exactly what you're going to do with yourself but...

Fuck what everyone else says, OP. Follow your passion, whatever that is.

Let me tell you something. People who have a job, that don't really love it, they tend to suck at it. Especially doctors. Doctors like that piss me off to no end, because it just seems like they come to work dreading the day, and they treat their patients like shit because of it. People die because of assholes that go to med school because mommy and daddy told them that was the best thing to do.

So you better love it whatever it is you do. You're going to spend a good portion of your waking life doing it.

If you do decide to become any sort of natural scientist, I stress the importance of internships and research experience. Pretty much necessary for grad school.

i would hardly call med school the "safe route." do pre-med, then decide, at a minimum, after your first year. you won't very far behind if you switch to a hard science major during/after premed, yet can still take the MCAT and apply to med school if need be.

everything your high school counselors tell you is bullshit, don't let them force you into a direct path just yet. during high school my counselor was trying to direct me to apply to all these places at, very expensive, university that i couldn't afford even with scholarships due to my dad being out of work. (so they could publish higher numbers for acceptances at higher ranked colleges and scholarships.)

currently in 2nd year of premed at a community college and don't regret it at all. switching over to pure chem major once i transfer to my public state school. got acquainted with college, kick-ass gpa, kept my part time job, and classes were no larger than 25 students.

I would go with your passion. Otherwise you could find yourself having a midlife crisis realizing you don't like how things turned out because you never followed your dreams.
