So /sci/, I am curious. What are the odds of two events occurring like this within a week of each other? It just seems a bit strange. Any thoughts?

It seems that everyone is reporting on acute trauma. I would be willing to accept the Arkansas one as trauma as it was on New Years Eve. However, there doesn't seem to be any reason for this to occur again in Louisiana.

Very high. You see, one strange thing, any thing, happens and is reported. For the next short while, any similar events are disproportionately noticed AND passed on. Then you have an illusion of clusters of "special" events.

Same with the "celebrities die in threes" myth.

I'm not referring to a type of collective disillusion. I am more than willing to accept the theories brought forth by the wildlife commsions from each state as long as they make sense. I'm not an expert in any way. I was merely looking here to see the likelihood of such events occurring with the explanations given. It just appears from what I have studied that such die offs of these birds are rare in such high numbers.

Either fatigue or darkness leads them to hit a building or the ground at full force. All die. Sounds possible.

I think my interest is peaked as to what could have caused the confusion that lead to the Acute Physical Trauma. I could believe fireworks on the Arkansas case, but the Louisiana case doesn't seem to have such a clear answer. I'm not even linking them, just looking for causes for each case.
>>2295782
The fish appeared to have died from a disease. That appears to be the most logical answer. This makes it highly unlikely that they are correlated with the bird kills. This time, it's just a case of the media making a conspiracy between the two events by reporting them in tandem.

"Acute physical trauma" this is a problem because all of the birds fell from the sky, so when they hit the ground there was trauma no matter what.

My take is that the bird thing happened and then the news/twitterfags took off on a wildlife reporting reporting frenzy.

The one about the Arkansas fish dying notes at the the bottom of the article that these kinds of fish death scenarios are not uncommon.

People seem to think this one is special just because some birds died not too long ago.
Yet all of the wildlife departments are saying they don't think these events are related.

Here in a minute people will come out demanding that there is a connection and that the wildlife departments are in some conspiracy and then not a damn thing will happen with this.

I agree with you, there has been explanations for nearly all incidents. I find it hard to believe that the 450+ birds in Louisiana died from a power line, but I'm not the expert. As long as there is some reasonable explanation. As for the fish kill in Arkansas, that's not that special. I just find it odd that large fish kills are being reported in larger areas. (Chesapeake Bay Fish Kill, New Zealand Fish Kill, and the Sardine Fish Kill in Brazil). It just seems a bit odd to happen in a one week stretch.

>> No.2296998

>>2296955
Sure it might be odd.
But when the experts do come out with an explanation for these events you need to make an effort to understand why that explanation is actually reasonable.

If I talk to someone who is not well versed in physics and I tell them it is impossible to go faster than the speed of light they will usually tell me that doesn't seem reasonable to them. Yet, that is the truth as far as the scientific community understands it.

Maybe we should go back to a simpler time. Where everything you caught and killed you used and respected. More and more I see us as a virus!!

I’d like to share a revelation that I’ve had during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species and I realized that you’re not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment but you humans do not. You move to an area and you multiply and multiply until every natural resource is consumed and the only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet. You’re a plague and we are the cure.

Was thinking about starting a new thread on this subject until I saw this one.

Michio Kaku is commenting on MSNBC on this occurence...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZqWerZ8z8Y
Claiming that some sort of physical event, which sounds like I'm sure he understands and has a mastery enough of that he can comment on it...
But then he goes on to talk about how something disturbed the 'lead bird' and as such all the others kamikazi'd or died when the lead bird started acting funny.

Just curious if any Ornithologists could let us know if it's feasible that so many birds just decided to kill themselves because the guy at front started acting funny.

Bird flocking is an emergent behavior. It's possible for the "lead" bird to send the flock into a fatal behavior. All the birds are following simple rules. Stay relatively close to the other birds, fly in about the same direction, and avoid collision. This is all you need to produce really beautiful, and chaotic, flocking behavior. If conditions are bad, the whole flock could also do something stupid as a group.

Interesting. I had to look up emergence, and searched a page on 'emergent behaviour'. I agree that this is a case of what looks like a pattern. I do question whether i agree with the premise that individual components of a sort of hive animal ; birds flocking, fish swimming, colonies of ants, would include those individual organisms completely shutting out sensory stimulus and other warning signs that once something had gone wrong with the lead bird, or even 4 or 6 or 9 other birds amongst them, that they would have tried to act in self-preservation.
For example, I've heard in a bee colony, sometimes when resources are short useless drones intended only for mating purposes are kicked out they die after this with no where else to go, but I would suggest that they probably try not to get pushed out, and struggle against the other bees. I'd also figure that a male mantis or a spider, after mating with a female, when she grabs him to eat him afterwars, his body reacts and he tries to get away. If it was possible to make her drop him, he probably wouldn't hop into her mouth.

Granted in the present case, perhaps some sort of rate environmental phenomenon, grouped with perhaps the birds evolutionary tendency to fly as close together as possible to maximize the benefits of flying in flocks created a situation where a lot of them died.

Also, we have no way of knowing if there were additional birds in the flock who didn't die as a result.

Very curious.
