how many times will you try to explain to you friends tonight that 2010 isn't the last year in the decade, but rather the first year in the new one?

a decade is simply 10 years, so you can define the start and end points of the decade however you want.

I thought decades are numbered based on the number in the tens digit.

I.e. the

naughts = 0 in tens
teens = 1 in tens
twenties = 2 in tens
etc.

The 90's started in 1990 not 1991.

You are arguing in my favor.
No year 0 means first decade was 1-10, the second 11-20, etc
Keep going on and you get to the current decade, 2001-2010

But our earth isn't 2010 years old. Who says that From the start of the earth day 0 wasn't some billion and 1 but rather something and billion and 2,3,4 or even 5 etc.. and and every decade would be from 2005-2015.

What would we call this proposed 2011 - 2020 decade. It's neither the teens nor the twenties.

If you're going to define it it ought to have a name.

Look fags,
Centuries start on '01 years and decades start on 'x0 years.

In fact, we didn't even start at year 1. The BC/AD system wasn't invented until the year 525, and the selection of the year 532 so that year 1 corresponded to Jesus' birth was just an educated guess. And then, on top of that, no one actually used this dating system until 250 years later, and there is some debate as to whether or not it was kept up properly during that interval; that is, we might have gained or lost a few years in there somewhere.

>> No.2277889

think in terms of decimals/fractions

we start on 0, 0.5, 1....all the way to 9, 9.5, 10

1990, 1990 and 6 months, 1991.....all the way to 1999, 1999 and 6 months, 2000

years of 1990 to 1999 is the decade
followed by 2000 to 2009, etc

deal with it

>> No.2278023

This point has absolutely nothing to do with counting conventions nor decimals nor what makes "sense" in a mathematical or scientific way. It is about the colloquialisms to do with naming the (in the grand scale of things) completely arbitrary ten year time period.
Looking back, as has been said in this thread already, the 'eighties started on 1980 and finished on 1989. Therefore, so as not to contradict what has already, it seems, been decided, today is NOT the start of a new decade.

I don't care because decades are the result of humans trying to see patterns and impose order on time where there is no synchronization with a natural cycle. The number at which we decide to roll over the digits to the left shouldn't decide our perspective on the world any more than it will without our conscious attempts.

Whoops. I mean: "Yeah! Pointless argument!"
