/sci/, have you been sending emails to your congressman about why they should be supporting space exploration and exploitation more?

Also NASA and astronomy news general

My congressman only cares about his hookers and blow. I would have more luck arguing my case to a goat.

Or maybe you could just hire some cheap hookers and get a little blow and your make your case that way...?

My goat was very receptive to my arguments for better space funding.

London (AFP) Mon Dec 27 - Cassini's explosion blow away Saturn's rings

"" Colliding with an undetected bit of dark matter at enormous speed, NASA/ESA's satellite previously orbiting Saturn suffered from a tragic malfunction which resulted in the explosion of its fuel. The fire spread to Saturn's ice ringlets which melted and fell into Saturn, thus destroying one of the wonders of the solar system.

(...)

Republican senator John McDough called for the cancellation of all planned NASA's unmanned missions and redirecting the funds to military research. ""

tbh, the last part is perfectly believable. I can totally see some senador from Kentucky or Texas pushing this or abstinence only sex-ed instead of exploring "places we're not sure even exist"

I think NASA would get a lot more funding if they, you know, discovered that there is evidence that the ark of noah is actually in mars and wanted to send a mission to explore it.

There is currently no purpose to exploring space, at least from manned missions.

NASA gets its space program funding cut because it has proven that nothing major is going to come from it. The cost-benefit of exploring space is a joke right now and serves no purpose.

Unless nasa proves there is a legitimate reason for more space exploration, they are going to have to settle for using satellites and robotic probes for space exploration

>At 1997 prices, a relatively small metallic asteroid with a diameter of 1 mile contains more than $20 trillion US dollars worth of industrial and precious metals.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Near_Earth_Objects#Near-Earth_asteroids
>As of May 2010, 7,075 near-Earth asteroids are known,[14] ranging in size up to ~32 kilometers (1036 Ganymed).[16] The number of near-Earth asteroids over one kilometer in diameter is estimated to be 500 - 1,000.

>This is interesting timing on my last article about China producing over 90% of the world’s rare earth minerals and because of a territory dispute, the stoppage of exports of these minerals and metals to Japan. Now it has been turned up a notch with China stopping the exports of rare earth metals to the United States as well.

I don't know how you could argue that money should be spent, e.g. on some African shithole whose corrupt government steal every penny intended for the destitute citizens rather than funding something that could in future provide a way to save humanity and the legacy of life on Earth.

maybe instead of space we should focus on earth. instead of trying to get another planet cuz we fucked this one y dont we just fix the one were on? trillions have been spent on space programs of all sorts for decades while people continue to starve and be homeless on our small planet, we cant even prioritize our money enough to take care of ourselves as a whole species

>> No.2262334

>>2262315

Yes, and if you multiply the trillions that have been spent on space exploration with maybe 100, then MAYBE you will get the money also spent on military and defence from paranoia.
