this tao guy is brilliant. i studied with one of his doctorate students. i also know a guy who went to high school with TT's wife (and friend with TT). from both accounts, TT's a great guy, quite generous (gives long reply to emails even from undergradutate nobodies), quite well-adjusted even though he was a child prodigy, and VERY VERY good in math research. i listened to his talk once in Germany but didnt get the chance to meet him up close.

i think he's our generation's Hilbert / Poincare

I am going through one of his proofs right now and am starting to feel butthurt.

In addition to his aptitude, he has been surrounded by high level mathematics since he was about 10, and was nurtured since birth to be an academic machine. I would think that you can attribute that more to familiarity of the subject rather than ingenious insight.

I was thinking: where am I in the natural distribution of humans? I think I am above average, and also know that there is a positive number of humans both above and below me. But still, does that make me a piece of shit?

I mean, look at Tao. He is a very decent guy, where does that leave me? Am I a decent person? Am I a good human? What am I? What's my purpose?

I know humanity won't probably remember me after my death. Does that matter? If not, then what do? Why work if not to just keep me alive!

You're problem is not with mathematics. You're going through an existential crisis, which is normal of people in their teens and twenties.

As the above poster said, "Liv fur de lulz". When you really think about it, that's the only people you can do.

When asked years later, Einstein couldn't replicate his work. Most of the original notes regarrdng GR/SR are in his 1st wife's handwriting.
