Yes. It's metaphorical. It has to be. You can't kill an intangible thing like the church. So, we're left with "kill all members of the church" or "end the organization that is the church, such as disbanding it". I think it's relatively clear that I just want the organization gone, not the people.

Correlation does not prove causation. However, when people say why they're doing what they're doing, that tends to be pretty persuasive evidence in most cases for causation.

Growing up with religion has little to do with actually being religious, and really believing it. Saddam Hussein paid lip service to religion all his life out of necessity. But he modeled his career after Stalin and rose to power the same way. Someone who really believes in an eternal state of reward and punishment isn't going to live his life that way.
