So this is my first time posting in /sci/, so please bear with me, I just need some help wrapping my head around this.

inb4stoptrolling inb4OPcan'tinb4

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ImvlS8PLIo

So I just listened to this dude talk for about an hour, and he's talking about how to basically measure the universe.

>You are now aware that 90% of your mass is empty space. Completely. Empty. Space. Nothing.

I must say that I ignored all his religious puns. I believe Religion =/= Science, and vice versa.

So this guy is stating that there could be multiple universes also! For you dumbfags, our universe is believed to be it. Planet -> System -> Galaxy -> Universe. That's it, but we can never physically see another universe because it is traveling faster than the speed of light, and if that's happening there's no way we can see it. BUT because of dark matter a.k.a. that nothing we're 90% made up of, we can test to see if it is possible, and... and... I need to discuss this shit with someone!

Anyone! C'mon!

Fuck you, and also, it not that hard to believe other universes, or even our own universe, would travel at the speed of light. Because of the Big Bang, we're all traveling at the speed of light, so...

I expected yall to be pompous dicks. I'm just trying to understand this shit. I ain't even mad though.

>> No.2224388

>>2224380

He actually touched on that, the edge of the universe. And we can measure down to 1% how big our universe actually is, but the problem being that past that would be impossible to see. It would be as a wall, opaque, because of radiations and whatnot.

From what I get from this guy, it is. A barrier of radiation.

BUT WHAT I THINK SOME NEED TO REMEMBER, is that if something is traveling faster than the speed of light away from us, than it cannot be SEEN. Because we see LIGHT.

>hope i'm right on that... -_-

>> No.2224401

>>2224394
But universes don't travel with the speed of light from anywhere. Whatever there is in between universes, I'd say it's pretty safe to say that it isn't anything that's familiar to us. For a definite answer we'd have to be able to experimentally probe the "region" in between universes to come up with any useful theory, which can't be done.
The speed of light is a random constant that most likely doesn't even exist in or in between most other universes, if there are any. It applies only within our own universe.

Say that the universe... universes, or space in between isn't traveling out or away but spreading... did that make any sense?

And our speed of light would have to be SOME sort of velocity in another... wouldn't it?

>> No.2224418

Wait, I think I'm missing it on the speed of light thing, The speed of light is a number though, whether it's a certain percentage off it's still a number, right?

The "outside the universe" thing was just for demonstrational purposes. He spoke of a 2D universe that can be observed from outside and us since we're 3D. He didn't mean that it's actually possible.

>> No.2224442

>>2224411
The speed of light is just one constant of many. I think you're trying to say that if we'd "shoot" light into another universe it should still travel at the speed of light within that universe as well. Now let's say for the sake of argument that it's actually possible to do something like that. It would still depend on the universe and its laws. If it's just like our own universe the light would travel at the speed of light. But most universe would most likely be vastly different to our own.
Most likely we'd shoot into an universe with laws that wouldn't allow light to exist. Our light wouldn't be able to enter this universe.

>> No.2224452

>>2224442

Okay, so even if we could penetrate through the edge of our universe to see past it, we most likely wouldn't be able to see anything anyway because it wouldn't be the same set of rules. But, for the sake of argument, let's say all universes have the same rules, just different results, would we still be able to see them???

Wait, I take that back. Because than I'm just making myself out to be right.

In any case, this hour long vid was definitely not a waste of my time. You should check it out.

How can something with mass be accelerated beyond the speed of light? Which model supports such?

>> No.2224482

>>2224474
You can't as far as I know. You'd need exactly an infite amount of energy to a accelerate any mass to the speed of light. And at that point it'd stop being mass and it'd become light.

The universe is defined as "all space" you could get to through motion, including traveling the speed of light, or faster.

How about you try making some fucking sense?

Again, the universe is defined to include all connected physical reality. You cannot simply just leave it. If you go futher and futher, you will just get more universe. Nothing can physicaly "leave". BECUASE THATS HOW WE FUCKING DEFINED THE UNIVERSE.

When physicist talk about "multiverses", they are not talking about some "other universes" physically next to ours...LMAO. They are talking about some unphysically (at leaat in 4d), disjoint objects.
