looking for math formulas that will aid me in taking the GED test within this week. No, not the ones that they list on the back of your test booklet.. but something like the formula to solve for x or write a proportion.. hell, anything that I may come across.

This is the 12 or so time that I've come here for help, so I won't be too surprised if my plea is ignored (and you call yourselves a science and math board).

I'm here for help if you can believe it.

Next time OP, don't memorize the examples, learn the formulas, you can learn them by doing a "few" more problems then you are required to do. I.E Do so many you can do algebra as easy as you can do 1+1.

>> No.2198356

First of all, good luck bro. Don't let the assholes on this board put you down. A lot of kids in my HS ended up with GEDs and most of them had some pretty extenuating circumstances. Secondly, good luck on the exam :D

That being said. Proportions and solving for a variable do not have formulas. To solve for x you must use arithmetic to separate x on its own side of the equation.

Example

x+7=8
x+7-7=8-7
x=1

We can check our work too, you can clearly see that 1+7=8.

Notice how I subtracted the seven? We use the opposite operation that is originally shown.

Addition<--->Subtraction
Multiplication<--->Division

Hopefully this helped! Anymore questions OP?

yes, anything you do to one side you do to the other

3x = 7

get x by itself

divide 3x by 3 to change coefficient of x to 1 (1x = x)

divide 7 by 3 to get 7/3

x = 7/3

and if didn't want a rational number (a fraction) divide 7 by 3 on a calculator or via long division

you want to isolate x.
= means both sides must be equal to each other.. ergo equals sign

so in this case 3x= 6. to get x alone reduce the 3 to 1 by division but remember, both sides must equal each other. so 3x/3 = 6/3
if you take 1 and times it by 3 it = 3, then divide it by 3 and it equals 1. this is why we divide here.
so we have isolated x and the new equation is x=6/3
x=2

just remember this op. 0=0 until something is done to either side. 2+2=4, 4=4, 4=3+1, 2+2=3+1

the nice thing about formulas with variables (x) is that they are fixed values.

The great thing about math at these levels is it doesn't change at all. It's been solidified before our birth. Don't give up OP, the majority of the world doesn't go further than this, sadly. You're doing yourself an awesome favor by dedicating the time to learn... It'll come.

9/9 = 1

so

9x = 9

9(1) = 9

x = ?

9(2) = 18

although this is obvious, what if we wanted

9x = 13.3118859
x=?

divide 9x by 9 (because 9/9 = 1 and we want to know the value for 1x)

divide 13.3118859 by 9...
