Not /sci/ but a drafting and design major. Pretty useless in a fucked economy with a million other people trying to get the same work knowing full well that the best bull-shitter will get the work and the best drafter will end up scrubbing toilets at a wal-mart for $8 and hour.

Doing pictorial drafting class with a teacher who is more concerned with design than drafting.

2 story retail store due Wednesday.

On drawing 2 of 5.

Nothing inked.

Still prcrastinating because every time I look at the board, I wish I could use AutoCAD and get my ideas out faster with more focus on better design then making my lines look 'pretty'.

With any luck, I can be a cable repair man at bright-house (Florida).

Yay for achieving nothing of value.

Confused on life in general.

Depressed over lots of issues.

Hate the way society is ran.

Hates money in general. Barter system would be better.

So many ideas that can honestly better a community. Sad that I feel 99.999~% certain I will never see a day full of people having the ability to really better themselves.

Crosses fingers.

Here's a tip:

If you 'forgot' calculus, there's two scenarios:

1) you forgot specific things, like what the derivative of cotx is.

2) you forgot how to do calculus or what integrate/derive mean or do.

If it's the first, that's just crap rote work, if it's the second, you never really understood calculus.

There's a saying, if you can't explain something to a child, you really don't know what you're talking about. An extended version should be, and if you're trying to explain it to an adult, they'll never believe you.

I was put on probation for a year and went straight to work. Working 60 hours a week for pathetic money really does put a focus and drive back in one, I did end up making $50k that year, which helped me become more economically stable and confident.

I honestly believe expecting 17-year olds to make decisions that will affect their entire professional lives is too much. There should be at least 1-2 years more of highschool.

In our school, Pre-Calc was a joke class that was basically review, and an implicit explanation of previous concepts.

I was in it for a week or two before I was switched to AP Calc (wee for me), and one of the first things were learned was the differential function/formula - but the teacher NEVER even linked it to the traditional change in y over change in x (slope). Like that's something simple that would be explicit to someone who understands math, but from our classes point, I bet lots of kids were confused.

Also, math is sort of something you have to... get. I liken it alot to video games, as much as you can SAY about video games, it's an entirely different experience to PLAYING them, and most people can't understand the difference. Math is almost like a fetish, except normal people can learn it properly, if they figure out the relationships and things.

Back to your question, the most tips I can give are try to understand your calc and math stuff spatially and visually, like in terms of areas, volumes, and pre-existing information. People who understand math from a spatial/gaming-type perspective are inherently more confident and have a better grasp, though they can frequently be wrong with complete work as much of stuff we do today is pure rote.

I'm actually severely ADHD and depressive, but I was frequently one of the most comprehending kids in my class. I passed math, but ended up failing physics cause of the very very rote work, that just didn't really give any benefit to my understanding.

Are there any books/materials that actually teach math this way? I have a very high spatial aptitude and I always end up thinking of math in this way, but every time I've been taught it, it's been through rote memorisation of methods and shallow descriptions of the underlying principles.

There's one book:

Visual Math - See How Math Makes Sense [GeneGeter.com]

Downloaded it a LONG time ago, but never checked it out.

It's not a Calculus book, though it may cover some Calc ideas.

The book I had to help me with calc was Master Math: Calculus. My friend and I didn't get the chain rule, then one day we hung out, went over the book I had, and it hit us like a ton of bricks. I also like this book because it's alot more concise, though I didn't use it much.

A tip might be sometimes you just have to take a break. I was playing a game with someone, they understood the other problems, but couldn't figure out *how* the derivative was the derivative for an equation, but then after talking about it, then looking back on it later, he says he got it.
