i was wondering - did life start once and then split off/evolve or did life start multiple times here on earth? is there even a scientific way of knowing?

More likely then not it started in a single area, or multiple areas with the same conditions as the DNA for almost all life is made up of the same parts(ACGT) which implies that it started similarly.

All current life on earth evolved from a single common ancestor.

If there were other forms of life that evolved independently on the early earth, ours wiped it out fairly quickly.

While everything on Earth evolved from one common ancestor, I wonder what the likelihood the recent find of the bacteria in the poisonous lake in California could be a separate much younger evolutionary tree. Though I am no expert on evolution so no idea.
