Current estimates of polar bear population do not exceed 30,000 total individuals. 1972's bear population was roughly 20,000; the population did decrease to approximately 10,000, but this was due to unregulated hunting, which was a fad that killed over 1,250 bears per year at its height during the late 1960s. The two threats to the long-term survival of the polar bear are distinct.
