The concept of "negative zero" could actually be useful when discussing functions like these.
As you can see, as x approaches 0 from the negative direction (as x becomes an infinitely small negative number, "minus zero") y tends towards negative infinity. As x approaches 0 from the positive direction y tends towards positive infinity.
