Do you think our representatives in Congress even understand that every time they cut funding for science, technology, and education we come ones step closer to being a former superpower?

>> No.2114907

Most of them probably do, but most high tech companies don't have as much money to spend on bribes as the oil companies and banks do.

>> No.2114913

I think most of congress are a bunch of old farts who don't understand much of anything about anything and let whoever bribes them with the right sweet words and a good amount of cash make their decisions for them.

Whats so great about spending billions of dollars to study space rocks and gas?

>> No.2114922

Science is poorly represented in congress. How many members of Congress are scientists? They don't care.

>> No.2114931

I think lobbying should be illegal, for this and other reasons.

>>2114919
How do you think we got those rocks to begin with?

>> No.2114947

>>2114922
Not many scientists seem to want to go into politics, for obvious reasons.

Joe Average: Busts his ass working a productive job and being a contributing member of society, has limited time to bend the ears of politicians.

Corporate Lobbyist: Paid specifically to bend the ears of politicians, can spend all of his working hours doing this. Also has access to significant resources that can be used as gifts and bribes for politicians.

TBH I don't think you even need to bring up the topic of scientific funding to demonstrate why lobbying should not be tolerated.

GOREBULL WARMING AND 'CLIMATE SCIENCE' DESERVE TO BE CUT FROM THE BUDGET! ALSO STEM CELL RESEARCH KILLS BABBYS! DOWN WITH SCIENCE, LET'S GO BACK INTO THE DARK AGES!

I also think the cultural trend of anti-intellectualism that glorifies ignorance and living in poverty are a major problem.

Republicans need their support base to feel good about themselves and be firm in the knowledge of their place as "real americans".

>> No.2115036

NASA gives some terrible returns for the resources invested in it... they're too dependent on private industry following behind them instead of just getting shit done one step at a time.

>> No.2115064

>>2115036
And private industries would hate to lose organizations like NASA. Government and academic programs do a lot of the purely scientific research companies hate to spend money on.

>> No.2115093

>>2115086
They know how to manipulate people into voting for them.

Well... actually they pay other people to do that for them.

>> No.2115243

sadly, even when scientists meet with congressional committees, etc their comments fall on deaf ears. we've got scientists on senatorial staffs too...a friend of mine is working in the white house as a national academies rep.....still we get squat.

i think the problem is that science can't give instant results a lot of the time, and getting things instantaneously is what the average american wants. and the anti-intellectual movement that seems to be occurring doesn't help things either.

*sigh* this country is SO phenomenally retarded and can't even recognize it...

What's gonna happen is that those researchers dudes are gonna have to get a job somewhere, and that equipment just can't go to waste. And those patents and research..
Technically, it's like putting nasa in mexico, leeching off mexico instead of the states while the tech/discoveries are gained from americans living in mexico
