2111736 No.2111736 [Reply] [Original]

Listen up, /sci/ducks and newcomers alike. I personally am sick of homework, religion and troll questions that are guaranteed 100+ replies.

Here's some advice for you. Install the 4chan addon for Firefox, and hide any troll threads you see, so you're not tempted to reply when you see them again. You can find it here:
http://www.4chan.org/tools/

Troll threads include ones complaining about either side of the religion debate, that look like they're by Aether, have questions such as the 0.999... = 1 debate or the boy/girl paradox or make your common sense tingle.

I'm going to post some links for people to answer the questions they always have when they come. I do want you all to learn, after all. I'd just prefer /sci/ was discussing science and math than repeatedly teaching basic concepts to people.

http://www.wolframalpha.com/
>A good site that will do your math homework. It knows everything else, too.

http://www.khanacademy.org/
>If you're not a lazy fuck and actually want to understand math better, use this site. Only does high school math.

http://ocw.mit.edu/
>A fair bit of MIT's lectures, problem sets, etc. You're not guaranteed all the course material, but the introductory courses seem to be covered fairly well.

http://oyc.yale.edu/
>Same as MIT OCW, except for Yale. Haven't used it myself.

I'm hoping this can get stickied, so I'm not posting copyrighted material, sorry.

Posting xkcd because it's kinda /sci/ related and is creative commons.

One can dream. Post other helpful links if you want. And don't stress about copyrighted stuff, I've decided that if it gets stickied a mod can just delete the replies that contain links to copyrighted material.

This would be excellent.

Does anyone have that link with probably literally over 9000 PDFs, as we're not too fussed about copyright now?

Wait OP! 0.999... = 1? WTF? Mind.Blown.

Wow, this /sci/ board has a fuck load of interesting stuff. Reminds me of something I was thinking the other day. Like, what if we're all just biological machines and free will is an illusion?!? Anyone on here ever think that?

nope, at the point which religion can be backed by extraordinary evidence (read:good) it's no longer religion, but scientific

>> No.2112085

>>2112080
Yes, but what if it isn't?
"There is a supreme being" is an extraordinary claim if I ever heard one.

If divine intervention isn't claimed, it's outside the realm of science, of course. But it's still an extraordinary claim, so shouldn't we request extraordinary evidence?

>> No.2112089

>>2112085
The big bang is also an extraordinary claim. Unlike Christianity, there is no evidence at all for it.

A good way to troll sci.
Ask This:
Mr. Jones has two children. The older child is a girl. What is the probability that both children are girls?

You will get 230 posts of retards arguing 2/3 vs 1/2.

1/2, because the first girl is irrelevant to the creation/existance of the 2nd girl (unless some wincest is going on), and thus doesn't factor into the equation.

no its 2/3, its a trick question, your answer would require the asker to say "each child"
seems pretty easy to me, and here I was hoping for some Gender politics/superiority shit storms, all I got was this lousy statistic.

>> No.2112162

>>2112145
well lets do the math (aka factor in the first girl (I lied it can be done)), the probability that the first girl is a girl is 1/1 the probability the unknown child is a girl is 1/2.

1/1 x 1/2 = 1/2

>> No.2112186

>>2112145
no, the answer to that specific question is 1/2
it's 2/3 if it says one child is a girl, but it specifies the older child is a girl

Let A be the event that the older child is a girl
Let B be the event that the younger child is a girl

A and B are independent events
Hence, P(B|A)=P(B)=1/2

>> No.2112190

so the probability of a girl being a boy is 1/2? Well I suppose if you account for the possibility of the older/first girl being a trap you could be some what right...
