I'm sorry that I got defensive. Let's just say that Christianity get a bad rap on /sci/ and that made me act irrationally.

The point is that I wasn't sure one way or the other. That's the beauty of curiosity. Discovering what is true, not making it up. Anyone who is after the truth and only the truth will of necessity come to the one truth. But being a person who favors what is true is a little bit like a religion. It isn't devoid of emotion or feeling altogether, and I get the feeling that that is what you mean by "atheist." Did I feel that life had no meaning? No. Did I believe in the Christian God? No. So, I was atheist in the respect that I had no proof for any god, but you could say that I was inspired to have faith in an ultimate discoverable truth. Now, what I found, I call God. But I am atheistic in the sense that I don't believe in any God. Because no description of God is god, no God in the mind is accurate. So, I'm an atheist. But I believe in the truth. I know its there because I went looking for it, and found it.

Maybe I should change my whole lexicon to reach people like you. I don't believe in God. But I know that a commitment to the truth yields results, and they aren't subjective results. And for what its worth, the people who wrote the bible knew what they were talking about, but the people who read the bible don't. So in some sense, I'm identifying with a bunch of ingorant worshippers if I say I'm a theist, just as much as if I say I'm atheist.

A common mistake is that people take the statement as proof that they, as a human person, exist. However, it is a severely limited conclusion that does nothing to prove that one's own body exists, let alone anything else that is perceived in the physical universe.

It only proves that one's mind exists (that part of an individual that observes oneself doing the doubting). It does not rule out other possibilities, such as waking up to find oneself to be a butterfly who had dreamed of having lived a human life.

Well avoiding for the moment that atheism is still basically theistic... The better question is to ask yourself how you could keep living if you were agnostic.

And the answer is simple: Be good, do good work and the world will be a better place for your efforts.

You don't have to live forever and neither does the world, but if you expect for some other people to outlive you maybe you should devote your life to making the place a little better for them under the assumption that some of them will do the same and the world will continue to get better.

There is nothing wrong with that, except that those goals have no meaning because they could never be intentionally undertaken.

Ponder this; do you ever make plans and then set them into action? Let me rephrase that, to avoid your predictable response, do you feel as if you make plans and then set them into action? If you want to go out for a bite to eat, don't you go through the motions as if you are controlling yourself?

This feeling will never go away. Never. So let me ask you, would it feel different to you if you had "real free will"(whatever that means)? Or would it feel the same as it does already?

Even if it's an illusion, it's a perfect one. So, if it already feels like we have free will, what does it matter whether or not we do?

It doesn't matter.

Yes. I'm a Gnostic Christian and follow the teachings of Edgar Cayce, who explains the concept of becoming a Christianity in a literal sense. Jesus arose from the dead because He was the first soul incarnate to detach himself from material existence and connect with The Oneness, God.

By being freed from carnal existence through death, He became The Christ, and became One with the universe again, just as He was before He incarnated. In this instance He chose to re-inhabit His corpse. However, due to the vibrating nature of a spirit transgressing dimensions, which manifests itself through electrons/electricity at an atomic level that gives us all life, His body was vibrating at unnatural frequency, hence why He tells Mary not to touch Him when she approaches Him.

This is what I've come to believe from Edgar Cayce and Rudolph Steiner.

All of this nihilistic obsessing over lack of meaning is pardon the pun, pointless.

Following the same reasoning as my previous post, what difference would it make if there was some final cosmic logic that imbued everything with meaning? The concept is just as incoherent as the concept of free will, because ultimately it's up to you whether or not that meaning is important to you.

We already make meaning and follow logic, following my example about free will in the last post, what difference does it make? None.

We already experience meaning and will, we already have that experience. What else do you want?

Also, you put forth a concept which you later dropped. You mentioned "handle" as though it were a skill, then retracted that idea in favor of a more objective description of people who commit suicide as a way out. I don't see how "handling" has anything to do with the pleasure/pain balance.

It would be more satisfying for me if at some point say...ever, the religious person they were debating said, "you know what, that makes sense, you're right!" But instead it's just a lot of preaching to the choir, at the end, both of them just carry on with their opinions unchanged.

Yes I did. But when you're faced with that much stress and depression it is somewhat natural to to give up.
Extream depression isn't suppose to be natural within out bodies, it usually brought on by external situations. However it is a natural thing when those situations arise.
