Abstract. We propose novel propulsion driven by ablation plasma pressures produced by the
irradiation of pulsed ion beams onto a propellant. The ion beam ablation propulsion
demonstrates by a thin foil (50 μmt), and the flyer velocity of 7.7 km/s at the ion beam energy
density of 2 kJ/cm2 adopted by using the Time-of-flight method is observed numerically and
experimentally. We estimate the performance of the ion beam ablation propulsion as specific
impulse of 3600 s and impulse bit density of 1700 Ns/m2 obtained from the demonstration
results. In the numerical analysis, a one-dimensional hydrodynamic model with ion beam energy
depositions is used. The control of the ion beam kinetic energy is only improvement of the
performance but also propellant consumption. The spacecraft driven by the ion beam ablation
provides high performance efficiency with short-pulsed ion beam irradiation. The numerical
results of the advanced model explained latent heat and real gas equation of state agreed well
with experimental ones over a wide range of the incident ion beam energy density.

INTRODUCTION
Pulsed ion beam ablations can produce high-density and high-temperature plasmas
efficiency. In the previous paper, we proposed the pulsed ion beam ablation
propulsion used reactions of such plasmas expansion as a propellant [1]. This
propulsion technique expects to perform high impulse bit and specific impulse,
because of its extremely fast exhaust with high-density of plasmas. High performance
propulsion systems have been researched and developed in order to explore deep
space recently. Electric propulsion is one of the candidate systems in realistic stage,
e.g., ion thruster [2], arc jet thruster [3], and so on [4,5]. It is very attractive in high
specific impulse productivity, but low thrust restricts the flight schedule of missions to
the outer space. On the other hand, chemical propulsion is well known systems as high
reliability by many achievements of missions. Nevertheless, it is not an economical
system due to high thrust and low specific impulse. In this paper, we firstly review the
novel technique of ion beam ablation propulsion by experimental demonstration and
numerical estimation of performance. Secondly, we explain a controllability of the
performance in order to improve it by changing the ion beam pulse width and ion...

beam kinetic energy. Finally, our recent researches of advanced numerical model
explained latent heat and real gas equation of state is discussed.
DEMONSTRATION OF ION BEAM ABLATION PROPULSION
The ion beam ablation propulsion was demonstrated by irradiation of ion beams
onto foils. K. Yatsui carried out the flyer acceleration and achieved the flyer velocity
of 7.7 km/s and the ablation pressure of 13 GPa, when the ion beam energy density of
2 kJ/cm2 was irradiated onto the Al foil (50 μmt) [6]. Figure 1 illustrates the basic
concept of the flyer acceleration by the ion beam ablation. When we irradiate the ion
beam onto the foil, the incident ion beam penetrates and deposits its energy into the
foil within the ion range. The ion range is so short and deposited energy density is so
high that a part of the ion range melts, evaporates, ionizes, and forms high-density and
high-temperature ablation plasma. Then, the residual part of the foil is accelerated by
the reaction of ablation plasma expansion and becomes the flyer. We analyzed flyer
acceleration numerically in order to examine the behavior of the ablation plasma and
the flyer.

Our numerical analysis uses a one-dimensional fluid model explained ion beam
interaction. The basic equations are expressed as follows (see image).

where ρ, u, P, T, q indicates density, relative velocity, pressure, temperature and von
Neuman artificial viscosity, respectively.
The flyer and ablation plasma formed solid, liquid, gas, and plasma are regarded as
a compressible fluid without any charge effects, because the ratio of the Debye length
to the electron mean free path is much less than 1 for the electron number density of 10^23 1/cm^3 or less at the temperature of 10^5 K or less. Interactions of the ion beam can
be taken into account as stopping power S and energy loss due to thermal conductions
H are considered [8]. The momentum of the ion beam is smaller than that of the
ablation plasma regard as the ion beam transfers only its energy not its momentum.
The ionization process can be expressed by Saha’s equation due to local thermal
equilibrium under extremely high plasma pressure [9]. In addition to the above basic
equations, an ideal gas equation of state was used because the ablation plasma is
formed instantaneously by irradiation of pulsed ion beam, and phase change effects
from solids to plasmas are disregarded. All aboved equations are solved by standard
finite difference techniques in the Lagrangian coordinate [10].
