ok /sci/
why do people cheat?
is it because we are evolutionarily designed to multiply as much as possible?
are we all polyamorous at heart?
is it too easy to attract someone by saying or doing the right things, regardless of whether they are single or not?
the thrill of the unknown/getting caught?
I'm struggling to understand it... perfectly good people fucking up perfectly good relationships.
see if you can provide a scientific explanation.

Humans naturally seek out what is best for themselves. Marriage and the concept of having a girlfriend was not included in our evolution. Many animals were made for one night stands.

Because monogamous relationships are pointless to begin with? It feels good having sex with women. idk why you need to ask /sci/ this.

Promiscuity is linked to hereditary success. Look at species that are monogamous and see why they failed. By having only a single mate you decrease your chances of producing another generation. So having multiple partners increases your fitness (bio def'n). Therefore cheating shouldn't be look down at but rather encouraged. Not to mention cheating on someone is rather hot.

Men cheat because they can impregnate many women, so fucking only one is not evolutionary sound.
Women cheat because the men they want are taken and because good caretakers are frequently bad biological fathers. Also, having a son who fucks more women means passing more genes. Getting pregnant with a man who fucks many women is the best way a woman can make sure her son fucks many women.
Of course most people (especially women) won't admit it - it is subconscious, not something people think about.

No species is actually monogamous, DNA tests on all kinds of 'monogamous' species shows that there's a shit load of mating going on between pairs. If anything the illusion of monogamy just sets us up in to nice units of two to raise and provide for children. This way the species as a whole benefits. It's quite a cool system actually, people are able to mix their genes through extramarital affairs (which benefits the species) and most kids get a pair of parents (also of benefit to the species).

If you really loved her then you'd be monogamous.
If she's just a friend who had some shaman in black wave his hands and invoke his imaginary friend to make it official then go out and hit as many pieces of ass as possible regardless of gender. Just make sure you come home with a clean weiner.

they cheat and yet are still so attached to to their partner - wanting forgiveness, wishing they had never done it. Once can be forgiven - several times however just becomes a bit wtf. Wouldn't everything you are saying imply that they would happily not commit to a relationship or accept it is over once they cheat?

Only weak people can't resist temptations.

many species for life long breeding relationships

birds, mostly

so it must have evolutionary advantages.

i'm guessing a stable background/upbringing may make your offspring more sexually successful, thus passing on your genes to a further generation

but why stay in the relationship? I may not be completely monogamous, but at least i am mature enough to stay truthful to the person that i actually want more than anyone else in the long term. If youre gonna be in the mindset that promiscuity is appropiate - why not be single?
