Steven Hawking just died an hour ago of pneumonia. May one of the greatest minds ever to live rest in peace.

I'm sorry, but it was quite clearly established that even though we didn't find it, we shouldn't have. Hawking Radiation would never be visible to us from here. You would have to be within the black holes local space to detect it.

They gave Carl Sagan a documentary, and he wasn't that important an astronomer.

They've given Hawking documentaries and book deals because his first popular big was so big, and because people think he's some kind of wizard. What with his guest appearances on Star Trek and The Simpsons.

It's not like any cares about the science the guy has done.

I mean, at least when Sagan left science he popularized science and made it accessible. If Hawking's done anything it's the opposite.

How about this.

I care about the work he has done. And to me, that is enough. He contributed a lot to science; and his presentational style and penchant for a bit of sci-fi theatrics to tie it all together made him unique.

He was the type of scientist who knew the numbers, understood the number, but he didn't JUST see the numbers. He saw the universe as something beyond math, as something insanely beautiful in a very humanly emotional way. That is something many scientists lack; they may be smart but they have no imagination of any kind.
