can humans hibernate? I know we dont, I just want to know if we can.

I think you mean hypothermia?

I don't think so. I don't think we can slow down our metabolism enough. Besides, would YOU want your anus plugged with a shit-cork?

Yeah captcha, one of those.

There's a puffer fish that makes a poison that can cause a "death-like" state in humans. That is to say that any doctor who comes up to said "corpse" will more than likely feel no heartbeat due to dramatically reduced heartrate and blood pressure. It is also a paralytic which will leave the body as lifeless as...well, a dead guy. Due to the paralysis, the bodies oxygen consumption is also dramatically reduced, allowing the person to live for 24 hours without taking a single breath. However, since the poison does not cross the Blood-Brain barrier, all of the neurological processes of the brain are unaffected. There have been people who have said that they've been completely conscious and aware of everything that was happening around them and to them while under the affects of this poison.

Not that it is true hibernation, but that is probably the next best thing. You can probably find all this on google or wikipedia or some shit, but I'm too damned lazy to look it up for you.

No we can't.

Yeah, There is actually a company doing research on suspended animation of humans (or essentially, hibernation) and it works. It's in human testing right now with great success. Here is a link to a presentation.

You can enter a state of hibernation by breathing Helium. It can be used in a similar manner to Oxygen in human respiration, but far less efficiently. This is why breathing Helium won't make you choke or feel like you're running out of breath.

You go into a coma-like state that you can be awoken from at any time by removing the Helium source.

Go try it out.

>24-hours without breath
>completely conscious

No. It takes oxygen to be completely conscious. Maybe they were partly conscious, in a very limited manner.

>for all intensive purposes
I wish I could dismiss his ideas based on this error.

But the thin about 10 parts per millions would make a good sci-fi plot. Like that episode in TNG where they find cryonically frozen 20th century figures. It could be about an astronaut orbiting the Sun in accidental suspended animation. Except he would be a real person and not an archetypal caricature, unlike that TNG episode.

I can confirm this works as I have tried it myself but you must be VERY careful.

You can only survive for about 1 week without water so if you do this and nobody is around to wake you out of it YOU WILL DIE FROM DEHYDRATION!

Don't be stupid! Tell somebody to wake you up before trying a helium hibernation! And have fun!
