Why are electrons negative and protons positive? Is it completely arbitrary and if it is shouldn't it be changed to something meaningful, useful, or practical?

you could easily switch the definition of pos and neg, but why is that better?

It never made sense to me how an atom can loose electrons and then become positively charged. It's more intuitive to think the opposite.

In fact, it was Benjamin Franklin who made the arbitrary decision.
