If/when we make contact with an intelligent alien species, will we be able to communicate anything? What if there is absolutely no point of relation? What if they don't even use binary, but some other kind of system? What if their math isn't even numerical in the way we understand it?! It sounds impossible, but it isn't. Think about it; every single point of evolution for them, from the very beginning, would be entirely separate from our own. What if it's an entire alien race consisting of only 20 individuals? What if it's just one big organism, like Solaris?

if teh mooviez are anything to go by all we will need to do is talk loudly in their accent and we will be fine

If they are intelligent it'd be quite easily to establish some kind of system of communication. Even dogs and cats , are able to understand basic commands through inference.

/sci/ is officially no fun. I don't have the screencap, but this is a long-established fact. If you don't like it, find somewhere else.

Well, if there's no point of relation, then either they leave or shit's gonna get physical (fisticuffs and such, you know).

That's a foregone conclusion. Dogs and cats evolved in the same base environment as us. It's hard to understand how different aliens could be because any point of view about it is from our perspective; we can't help it, we know what we know. To be introduced with something completely apart from our sphere of understanding would provide no point of relation.

That would be something. We meet intelligent life, it's an amazing occurrence unparalleled in significance, but then we can't communicate at all. So they just leave. lol
