What books and videos would /sci/ recommend for a person who wants to get started learning about science in general, but finds it difficult to know where to start based on the sheer volume of material out there?

Some specific areas of interest to me are particle physics and astronomy, but any subject that you know of a good book that caters to beginners that would prime someone for more advanced topics later on would be of great help.

Thats if he wants to understand carl sagan.
I think what he wants to understand *science*
Dont get me wrong, Cosmos was a serious formative influence on me going into science, but it taught me very little of the actual mechanisms of nature.

I've watched Cosmos.

I took AP Calc in HS (got a 2 though), Calculus in college (A-). For science, I did really well in Biology, but never took a physics course ever. took an astronomy course but dont remember much from it.
