Fluid mechanics. A very similar hexagon was created in the lab, basically it's just a... standing wave? I think that's what they called it.

I disagree. Biology has "cool factor" too.

I sprinkled calcium chloride mixed with a segment of DNA innocuously labeled "cobra venom protease 1" and sprinkled it on a bunch of wasp oocytes. For some reason calcium chloride makes eukaryotic cells take up bits of DNA.

I happened to put this CVP1 on a segment that is identical to that which normally makes wasp venom proteases.

This resulting wasp now stings people with the active ingredient in king cobra venom. When she mates, it transfers as a dominant trait. If I was to release her, this trait would probably be highly selected for. Within a few generations most wasps in my area would be orders of magnitude more deadly.

Pic related. Her name is Sally.

So far as I know, we have no shitting idea how calcium chloride works. We just know it does. If you mix DNA segments with aqueous calcium chloride and give that solution to a cell, it will take up the DNA, integrate it into its genome, and start expressing it.

It integrates randomly, often in the middle of other genes, or in promoter regions, so it's hit or miss whether it actually works in a given cell. Fortunately wasp oocytes are a dime a dozen, so you can just do it repeatedly in parallel until you get things that don't die and also express your protein target.

Fun fact, Sally's venom contains CVP at 250x concentration as in cobra venom.

Grad student at MIT, bioengineering department (no cocks - it's biology). Did it because {
1. Spread E-coli on plate/in liquid medium. Do science to e-coli for 15 min.
2. Grow e-coli overnight.
3. Do science to resulting e-coli the next day for 15 min}
is boring and doesn't occupy enough of my research time.

Jesus fuck, man, there's so much untapped potential in the world. We need to build a clandestine research facility in, like, Somalia or something.

Please please please can we can we? There's so much mad science to do in biology. The tricky bits would be figuring out signalling so we can control your deadly, deadly minions.

Venom is already there for wasps; create a wasp with something new.

also, think of some other mutation that should give wasps an evolutionary advantage but that would benefit creatures they stung, in small quantities.
