Are there any new developments on lighting technology front?

Uuuh...what? LED is fine for reading or studying, not to mention growing plants, in the proper wavelengths. The trouble is that most people don't use said wavelengths, so the LED is either way dim or too harsh and bright.

LEDs coated with quantum dots produce a continuous spectrum instead of discrete wavelengths. They are still very expensive but you can buy dim light bulbs with them if you have the cash.

LEDs do NOT suck, TYVM.

I am *SO* glad this thread pops up the day my brand-new quantum meter arrives.

Check out the meter - FULL SUNLIGHT INTENSITY 3 INCHES AWAY. (The meter reads 0-1999 umol, full direct sunlight is 2000+ at sea level, a reading of 1 on the meter means you pegged it out.)

One of these is a LED and the other is incandescent.
You don't have to use LEDs with a harsh >10K CCT.

I use LED lighting in my house, but I will tell you that old incandescent light sockets aren't ideal for them. The sockets are thermally insulated to prevent fire with incandescent bulbs while with LEDs you're better off conducting away what little heat they make to keep them cool.

Don't buy shitty LED lights. Yes, the ones worth owning cost more. But they last for a decade and save money.

Protip: If it has more than 5 LEDs, it is probably shit.

If it is meant to go in an Edison light socket, it's wrong. Saying that the Edison light socket is fine is like saying that wax cylinders are adequate for modern music playback equipment. No.

Why are there so many deleted posts?

I meant to type "more than 25." Because those are usually 5mm LEDs, which are always rated for low current and are usually shitty in construction. There are exceptions, but most of them lose 50% brightness in about 1000 hours life.

Power LEDs require heatsinking (metal) and if run at decent power emit 100-400 lumens each. I build my desk lamp, it works pretty well. Probably should have used a nicer wall wart to power it, but it won't burn out for several years (or need any other attention). Cost me about $20 plus a dead lamp to cut open.
