Nothing more really, just anecdote. I'm a L2 speaker and I remember reading http://internet.ocii.com/~cmeek/puns.htm for days in the early years of the internet.

This sounds interesting and true.
I can't really confirm this, because I don't know shit about this, but it's logical that knowing more words + knowing more words with same meaning leads to better puns, which leads to liking them more.
