See, I'm a nuclear engineer, not a faggot, and am basically on the same tier as physicists (really, half the courses I have to take in school have dual designations as NE and physics courses). In that respect, engineering is just as much as a science, and engineers on a whole are smarter than scientists because not only do we understand and interpret theory, we utilize it to do something useful.

Also, Comp. Sci shouldn't be considered a science or an engineering because, really, it's neither. Also, it's being overrun by derka derks and Indians.

Speaking of Indians, the same thing goes for a lot of other basic engineerings (computer and electrical). In that respect, my job (as a nuclear engineer) will keep me God tier and in developed countries because more than 90% of jobs in the sector requires US citizenship and a high security clearance. My job will never become shittier or go out of style.

But, you see, comparing any given nuclear engineer to the best of the best of physicists is like comparing the Aryan race to the entirety of the niggers of Africa. It's unfair. Specialty in those fields of physics come after the undergraduate level. In short, you're right that an undergrad in NE won't understand that kind of theory, much in the same way that in undergrad in physics won't. On the otherhand, postgrad NEs can and DO utilize those theories. Do you seriously think a particle/nuclear physicist could design and build something like the LHC? Perhaps they could concoct the theory that the design is built on, but the actual design and building BASED on that theory is the job of NE. Let me put it this way: Sure, physicists realized that you needed to accelerate particles to 3.5 TeV to produce the desired collision to observe the building blocks of said particles. But there's no way in hell they realized how they could, let alone build a machine that could do it. Come back with a degree in anything other than trolling 4chan, and maybe then I'll believe you. But I can tell you, for sure, that you have no professional experience in either field.

The point is science and engineering work together. Without the engineering advancements, scientific advancements would be a lot slower, and vice versa. Neither is better than the other, and both are entirely necessary to the progress of society and humanity. Stop being pretentious cunts about it, engineering is just as important as pure science is.

Fuck it, I'm going to go full out on the names of physicists you pulled out of your ass.

Sure, Einstein theorized relativity and mass-energy equivalence, but it was Fermi and Oppenheimer (both nuclear engineers in their own right) that realized the ramifications and utilization of the mass-energy equivalence. By the same comparison, Feynman can also be considered as much of an NE as a physicist.

Hawking, on the other hand, is the outlier. Discussion of cosmological phenomenon may, one day, become useful to NEs (particularly the application of nuclear properties of black holes), but until we can get to space and study these phenomenon hands on, it's more of a dream than a reality.

TL;DR recognition and utilization of theory > simple theory

No, actually, not only are those fields completely unemployable, they also contribute absolutely nothing to society either. Astronomy is a huge fucking waste of money with no benefits, i shouldnt even have to say anything about archaeology, and geology is the major that all the football players take at engineering schools. There's a reason why geology is called "Rocks for Jocks", it's the major the schools recommend the football players take, because it's the easiest.

Historically, becoming an engineer meant you would be apprenticed under an engineer. Not go to school.

The only reason that changed is because around the beginning of the 20th century the system of apprenticeship could not meet the demand for engineerins and so many universities started offering academic programs in engineering.

The fact that engineering was now being taught en masse in a classroom environment created a strong pressure to emphasise those aspects of engineering it was easisest to teach, to test, and to write research papers on - that is, the formal theories of science.

geology is sweet because you CAN work with an undergrad degree, but to do anything really cool you need a masters (for professional work) or a phd (research). basically, unless you're a fucking genius, phd's are dumb because there aren't enough jobs. in any field.

At MIT, you get into grad school, you're set. Tuition remission + 64k/yr stipend, just because.
Grad school isn't typically paid for. It's not a question of whether or not you can pay for grad school, it's a question of whether or not you can live on the pittance they give you to attend.

OP, engineer is nothing more than applied science for industry. The only reason its respected is because they can work for industry and make a lot of money. It should be top tier and so should all the other applied sciences.

To be a competitive in the scientific industry and get the most funding you much actually constantly innovate your field, prove theorems, and research. You also need a Ph.D for most entry level science jobs which requires a long ass dissertation, writing a thesis, and often passing a comprehensive exam that covers nearly every single topic of your major.

Also engineering is only hard because the projects require a large time commitment. Scientists have to be naturally smart to make it, engineers don't they just have to put in the time. I know plenty of engineers that would never survive grad school and the dissertation.

Oh yeah I'm talking about real science not social sciences btw. Everyone knows social scientists have it a hundred times easier than real scientists.

fuck you, buddy. if you take social science seriously, it's hard. we're usually limited to being observationalists and our measurement is completely fucked up. but when we do learn something, it's fucking critical. increasing efficiency on a widget is trivial compared to learning how politicians rig elections without breaking the law.

1. Go back to school. Get a bachelor's someplace in physics in your spare time, save up your money in the meantime.
2. Get into a grad school, which is free + a stipend that is nearly impossible to live on OH WAIT LOL you were in a rich job with a large savings account. Quit your lawyerly stuff to study what you want in grad school, live on savings. Get a new job after you're done with your degree.

Thanks man.

I think my mistake was that I finished school quite young (16 years old - i was a couple years ahead). All the universities waved a scholarship in my face due to my excellent marks. Like a typical indecisive teenager I thought "fuck maths&physics I've had enough", and picked double law/economics bachelor's degrees based on some vague notions of the lifestyle it would bring. It has brought that lifestyle - but I really love my maths/physics and wish I was doing something with that.

I'm actually saving up and at the beginning of next year I'm going to enrol part-time in a post-grad course. Still going to work full-time as a lawyer for the time being - I'll study at nights (when I can) and on the weekend.

Fuck it - I'm doing it.

Holy shit. Women's Studies and Political Science do not belong on the same tier.
A Poli Sci degree opens up a pretty wide range of respectable, legitimate careers. If you get your B.A. in a decent school, have good grades, and do well on the LSAT, you can even get accepted into law school, even if you weren't prelaw.
A degree in women's studies forces you into two career paths: spending a shit ton of money on grad school for an insignificant return from a teaching career (assuming any university wants to hire you), and/or being well published well enough on the single subject of complaining about hetero-normative society to feed yourself.

Poli Sci major, Spanish Language minor here, and yeah, I'm butthurt as hell. I'm not trying to say that Poli Sci is comparable to Mathematics or anything but just... goddamn, man. I at least have hope for a future.

The truth is that you could take Engineering and Astronomy out of the top tier (because they clearly don't belong there) and then make just two tiers. Math, Physics, Chemistry and Medicine (but let's call it biochemistry) are the reasons that all the other fields exist. So they should be alone at the top. They are innovative fields- where new ideas come from. Engineering doesn't make new ideas- it puts the new ideas made by Physics and Math into practice. That is a noble endeavor, but it is not innovative and it is entirely dependent on other fields. Math, Physics, Chemistry, and Biochemistry have a symbiotic relationship with each other. All other fields exhibit varying degrees of parasitism. That is not to say that the lesser fields are not important, because they are. I'll use an analogy to explain:

Einstein's neighborhood had a garbage man. Without said garbageman, the neighborhood would have been filthy and an unhealthy place to be. So the garbageman's role in life is significant. Engineering, law, philosophy, etc are like the garbageman. They all do things that better humanity. But they don't relate space and time. The don't unleash the most awesome power the Universe has ever known. They don't do anything that hasn't already been done.

Thank you for you time.
