Yeah, the diagram does a horrible job at explaining it. Had to read it a couple times to figure out wtf was going on.

He brought one lamp, got a receipt, give lamp to friend, go back to the store with the receipt, pick up another lamp, return it and get your money back. You are left with one free lamp.

Op is asking if you can get away with buying an item from a store and going back with the receipt, picking up another item off the shelf and turning that in as a return to get your money back.

Yes this works. Serialized items like computers and shit will get you caught. Works best if you can go to a different store when you are doing this more than once.

This is also why most stores don't give cash refunds anymore. If all you get is in store credit, this scheme falls apart after the first iteration.

Store credit is free things, too. Suppose you want a playstation and an xbox. Buy playstation, return playstation from shelf for store credit, use store credit to buy xbox.
