/r/ing the comic showing how absurd the standard/english system is, compared to how much sense the metric system makes. I remember at the end it said, trolling at its finest, go USA!

In return, random pics.

>> No.1835592

There's nothing absurd about the english system. The metric system may be more convenient for scientific measurements, but it isn't particularly more useful for everyday life at all.

Nothing's "wrong" with the metric system. Switching to metric a bit like learning German when everyone in your country already speaks English. Maybe German is easier to conjugate and has simpler rules but it's not big enough to offset the expense of trading everything over to a new language.

>Indeed, NASA lost an unmanned mission owing to a mix-up between metric and imperial units. In September 1999, its $125 million Mars Climate Orbiter probe was destroyed because its attitude-control system used imperial units but its navigation software used metric units. As a result, it was 100 kilometres too close to Mars when it tried to enter orbit around the planet.

>Units have also played a role in other spacecraft problems. In 2006, the guidance system on NASA's DART spacecraft went awry and caused it to ram into a military satellite it was merely meant to dock with.

>Before DART's launch, NASA found that GPS data on its position was mistakenly being read by its computer in feet. Ironically, correcting this to metres in a simulator resulted in an incorrect change to another parameter that was programmed into the spacecraft – a problem that led to the collision.

in what way is English system superior?
I'm not trolling or anything, just genuinely interested.
I only hear "it's convenient", "we use it in everyday life" and so on. So the only plus of English system is that everyone in US uses it, so you can't switch over to metric even if you wanted to? Or are there any other advantages?

these fails aren't related to any of systems being superior/inferior, problem here is NASA can't get it right. If they used only one system, everything would be fine, no matter which system in particular, be it metric or imperial.

Therefore, NASA screwups are unrelated.

Then we all got wicked drunk and had a good time overall. China kept making our stuff, India did the same, Africa was left to it's self-mutilation and general faggotry, and the Middle East was just wondering where the Americans went.

Because the costs would be astronomical. It's cheaper to just teach everyone both like we've been doing for decades. Despite a few mistakes from time to time, the USA is still the research and innovated center of the world. Eventually the future generations will hopefully faze it out. It's not like we don't already use kilograms, meters, and centimeters. It will happen eventually but the world sure a fuck cares a lot about what we do or think. You guys really need to fuck off. all off the top of my head:

1 mile = 1760 yards = 5280 feet = 1.609 km

1 cubic foot = 7.48 gallons = 1440 cubic inches = 28.3 liters

1 gallon = 4 quarts = 8 pints = 16 cups = 128 oz = 8.36 pounds of water = 3.785 liters

I strongly believe USA needs to switch to the metric system for two reasons
1) it will put us in line with the rest of the world
2) most educated americans know the metric system

Why even argue ? Metric system is more reliable, because it is standartized. For example, 1 cubic metre, is defined exactly, condition at which it is, are precisely defined, imperial units are not. So is for weight units.

It's a great fucking idea, which most of the calculations you do are on the surface of the fucking earth. I'd probably still be calculating some shit from a year ago if I didn't have a normalized system, where I can just substitute in a pound force for a pound mass, and thereby do the problem in my head, instead of explicitly multiplying it by g.
