They are on it. I think that I somewhen saw a documentary film that they are experimenting force shields on spacecraft. It is a 'bubble' of charged plasma contained by a fine mesh of superconducting wire

in order to create a portable human size force field of about 3m^2 you will need 300 MW. seeing as most nuclear power plant produce about 800MW I think it is still a bit impractical for the next couple of years
