How can philosophy be a science if it's just applied THC?

I approve of this.

I take philosophy and i don't know why it's considered a science.

A thing i like about philosophy is that it can alter your mindset on a particular subject (let's say trig) and help you understand it more.

It's not considered a science at all, just like math for instance. It's not empirical.

>> No.1771946

Philosophy isn't a science. I've never seen a philosopher follow the scientific method.

>> No.1771977

Science is a subdivision of philosophy. Philosophy in general creates theories about anything and everything. Science is that part of these theories which can be proven or rejected.

>> No.1771987

>>1771977
Theories (and hypotheses) can never be proven, only falsified. Saying something is 'proven' would eliminate the possibility of falsification which is not how science functions.

No, science is the subset of philosophy that studies nature based on empirical observation and the scientific method. Implied in the scientific method is the fact that it only admits falsifiable theories, laws, or hypotheses, but the main distinguishing characteristic from the rest of philosophy is the fact that it only studies nature, the physical world.

That's like saying saying apples are a subdivision of oranges, because apples are when oranges are not.

>> No.1772054

>>1772037
Well, no. Science and philosophy are two different and complementary methods to acquire knowledge. Where philosophy only deals with rationality and logic etc, science deals with empirical and physical experimentation. It's true that there sometimes isn't a clear demarcation between the fields (eg in the philosophy of science itself), but they are separate methods and one is not the subdivision of the other.

Depending on what philosophy classes you have taken, you may have a different definition of philosophy than other people.

As for me, my definition is that of the umbrella term covering essentially all human thinking. So yes, science is a subdivision of philosophy. And so is theology, metaphysics, etc.
