Genetic engineering thread, /sci/. I have a specific question. Within the next century or two, our understanding of life will likely be sufficient to allow for designer animals. The good news is that it means real Pokemon. The bad news is that is also means real furries.

Is it worth it, /sci/?

Pic related, it's a pig that glows green under UV light.

The Asians and Mexicans already have those. They're called roosters.

Sure, if you like Pidgey.
Me, I want a Bulbasaur. And if furries will also exist, I'll have to live with that. I've never seen someone in a fursuit IRL anyway.

But now that I think of it, a bioengineered furry is like a fursuit that never, ever comes off...

You're projecting. The pokemon thing wasn't really the focus here, and no, I don't think all the horribly unrealistic facets of the show are possible. But a mouse that uses bioelectricity as an offensive or defensive weapon? Absolutely possible. Electric eels are the proof of concept. It would not work quite as well in air perhaps, and ranged effects might not be possible, but the idea of a "shockmouse" is well within reasonable bounds.

>> No.1735245

Fursuits are terrible though.

And body modified "furries" would be at least better than those covered head to toe in obnoxious tattoos and their ears/tongues/lips gauged out more than African tribes people.

Also, an IRL charizard would need a very high-calorie diet if it actually spewed anything combustible.

What kind of furries? Genetically-engineered super-furry chimeras, from scratch? i.e. "normal" furries?

Or people getting furry genemods?

Yeah, pretty much. Somatic cell gene modification is a lot harder than germline (reproductive) cell modification, but limited body mods will probably be possible around the same time as full designer animals - based off existing animals, of course. No reason to reinvent the wheel if it gets the job done, at least for the first 50 or so years of real designer animals.

1. Wasps transfected with Cobra Venom Protease 1, tagged for synthesis in venom glands only so the buggers don't dissolve themselves.
2. Wasps are shown a bright UV light, then poked with a needle, repeatedly, until they become enraged by the sight of a bright UV spot.
3. Put wasps in a container. Obtain a handheld UV laser. Release wasps, shine UV laser on furry.

Suffer not the furry to live.

A lot of the furries will be burnt and killed by Jesus nuts, but hey, think of the delicious conservative years.

>> No.1735433

You don't need genetically modified furries because by the time that kind of technology becomes available, complete nervous system monitoring technology will be available (working prototype in mah lab, squeedalee) and you can just replace the majority of your peripheral meats with bionic parts that look like they belong on a furry. You can even cover the robotic exoskeleton with reasonably priced carpet.

>> No.1735446

>>1735420
(Unless you're referring to actual human modification) I'd think the market would be stronger for Anthroids. Then again, I am kind of a robophiliac myself.

>>1735421
Of course, that would involve developing the technology to engineer "superfurries" without it becoming public until "superfurries" can actually be churned out. Sounds like it'd be difficult to do.

I like to imagine a future where we have genetically programmed bugs and critters building stuff and doing general upkeep of the city, cleaning the streets, unblocking drains and shit.

I also like to think because of high-rise buildings we could have more plant-life per square km in the city as there would be in a forest, and all this plant-life would be designed to be edible by humans (in case of a famine/seige etc.).
