Probably has some causation in the commercialization of Universities. Students aren't educated expressly toward furthering the field in which they study but more so to pass the tests of their educators and demonstrate only a level of competency which only serves to perpetuate the position of said educators.

This is not to say that there are not professors out there who seek to empower and inspire their students to further and revolutionize their fields of study.
