It's much easier than you'd think but finding someone that has full knowledge of it would help you greatly. I'd say with a competent "teacher" you could learn it in 1 week. The thing is that when you get to a point where you don't understand a certain topic fully it will probably lead to a chain reaction and stop you from understanding a shitload of other topics fully. I'd say start studying and whenever in doubt post here with what you'd like clarified. :)

If you studied a few hours per day for three months, then yes, I do believe you'd have a decent enough grasp of college algebra. But I agree with another poster here (assuming you're preparing for a more advanced class): Just take the damn college algebra class!
