I have respect for both theoretical and experimental physicists but this does seem to be the ongoing trend.

Only because you guys can't get those protons really close to each other. Seriously, WHAT THE HELL, GUYS?

its gay when protons touch

yeah, it's a harsh world and building machines to do simple stuff like exploding sub-atomic particles costs a shit-ton of money, time and requires know-how that isn't quite as available as, say, knowing how to ask for a big-mac at a mcdonalds.

We have the theory to do a lot of stuff, we just can't seem to get around to doing those things instead of making iphones. Go figure.

I understand it's about the relationship between theoretical and experimental physics but I'm not a physicist, could someone explain exactly to what problem this joke is referring.

A bunch of guys do math on computers and come up with a few ideas.

A bunch of other guys have to make real machines to real things to pick which computer guy was least wrong.

Of course both sides think they are better and more important than the other side.

Consider a plane. Boeing dudes do a shit of work on the computers before they even start with the prototypes right? So you can argue they are driving the process. At the same time you can't fly in a computer plane and actually go anywhere in the real world. Also things that are perfect on paper may have problems you didn't anticipate. So you can argue that theory people are helpful but full of themselves.

The best science is done by good alliances of theory and experimental.

The Theoretical Physicist is the one talking and the Experimental Scientist is the one gritting his teeth. Long story short?

Theoretical Physicists have a habit of utilizing equations/configuring problems out on paper, but don't know how painful/rigorous true experiments go. In the comic strip, the theoretical guy is telling the experimental scientist that 'all you have to do is put the protons together -duh!' What he fails to realize is that, experimentally, it's extremely difficult and costs time/money/patience.

>> No.1672543

There is no such thing as a "experimental scientist"

An experimental scientist is an engineer. All scientists are theoretical.

OP here
Specifically, they're talking about the LHC, and how it's taking so long to discover anything even though it's "simply colliding two protons"

>> No.1672821

so there's no such thing as empirical evidence amirite?
