I have a very fragmented, hardly rudimentary understanding of what global warming/climate change actually is. I seek coherent, cogent explanation.

Your not going to get a good explanation, anywhere. Its become a political issue. democrats thinks it important, republicans think its nothing.

Its one of those holes, where if you fall in... your fucked, forever.

But there are environmental scientists and climate scientists talking about it. There is some scientific basis to it. And, since science is a bit more indifferent, that's the part I'm trying to learn. I was hoping /sci/entists would know.

Much like religion and gay marriage.

Just bullshit that the suits whine and argue over, when nobody with an IQ over 80 notices, believes in it or cares.

There are gases in the atmosphere called greenhouse gases that trap radiation coming from the sun. If we didn't have those gases our planet would be like the moon, cold on the shadow side and hot on the sun-side. Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas that's released through the combustion of fossil fuels. By releasing trapped CO2 into the atmosphere we are increasing the concentration of greenhouse gases and therefore the amount of heat trapped.

This is the best series of videos on the topic I've ever seen.

If you're looking for a general overview I'd suggest you read the wiki page.

If you want a detailed overview but still in laymans terms I'd suggest you read:

If you want a more detailed overview of the scientific basis including primary scientific sources I'd suggest you read:

If you want some idea about which side to believe, just look at what kind of people are on either side:

Those that say there is no anthropogenic climate change are either politicians, political dupes, just dupes, or otherwise out of their area of expertice.

Those that say there IS antropogenic climate change are the large majority of actual climatologists, people who, at least I think, ought to know what they are talking about.

tl;dr: climate change deniers spout propaganda, pro climate change people say "these are the facts"
