For one thing, the person who told you that had his head up his ass. Sagan was at most a hard agnostic. His way of "retelling" information (which is a stupid phrase to begin with; it's called TEACHING) was to make people thing about things they may have dismissed before. He is partly responsible for a generation of kids becoming interested in science, astronomy in particular.
