Nelson was supposed to come in and deny SpaceX the HLS contract, which the acting admin with Lory Garver did a sole source award on. So he played politics and honored it when the acting admin resigned after deciding, in that once in a blue moon opportunity where NASA was able to decide its own fate and shot for the stars all in one. Despite that, he played things very by the book and tried to toe the line with the Biden admin. Then, one day, he was talking to a general at DoD with respect to SpaceX's benefits to the government for all their missions, Starlink gains and opportunities, etc. He learned something profound and that nugget of wisdom he carried with him to the congressional hearing on NASA's budget for 2022 and 2023 respectively. Nelson completely changed his tune on SpaceX after learning that bit of wisdom.

Which was that over the course of SpaceX's life since it was awarded the first CRS contract for $1.2Bn and then all subsequent awards, including HLS, it has saved the US government $40Bn in launch costs. They have been receiving superior capability, launch cadence, and mission flexibility from SpaceX AND have saved over $40Bn in the process. So even if he'll be gone when Trump retakes office in January, I doubt he'd regret it.

Bridenstine used to be climate change hoaxer. He then became the head of NASA, kept an open mind, and realized that no, climactic change is very much a real issue and needs a lot of time and money and research to be put towards it, because it has a material impact on National Security. Nelson follows a similar profile. The future NASA admin will undoubtedly do the same as his tenure will experience the boon of SpaceX via HLS for Moon and Mars and the profound opportunity it has on aerospace/orbital dominance for the US for generations to come.

At this point, its safe to say that their plumbing for 33 Raptors are pretty much gold. It'll be nuts when they bring Raptor 3s into future ship designs. The significant reduction in mass, will undoubtedly lead to another reduction in potential plumbing designs. We'll likely see a Falcon 9 Block 1 to Block 5 with Starship and M1C to ML1D+++ with a potential TWR of 2.0+ over the next 10 years of this program.

Gen3 full sized are about 1.2T per satellite. V2 Starships are capped to around 50T of payload. Which limits them to around 24 Gen3 Starlinks per launch or 12 groups of 2 as one launch block. That's basically the same output as a Falcon 9. But with a launch cadence of once a month. Makes the value proposition of launch not very economical. The other reason is that by launching after a successful catch, they can qualify that their ship is actually capable of putting that payload up. Right now, they have no way to recover the ship and really tear it down to see what needs reinforcing, what needs improvement in terms of allow composition, etc.Visual and sensor data will only take you so far vs being able to actually carve up the ship and put it under the microscope and see how it truly did.

Lastly and most importantly, Tower 2 is not ready yet to fly Starships. Which means if they attempt the catch, it fails, and takes out tower 1, they're screwed and don't have a way to continue for a year. Which is a BIG problem under the Trump admin, because it will make HIM look bad with no progress in aerospace despite his likely national mandate that he probably will dictate once sworn in. Thus it would be foolish to launch Starlinks on Starships before any of this supporting infrastructure is ready to go.

Sounds like they need to build the equivalent of the QD arm and automated blast shielding at the top of the tower, so that during launch the shield covers it and after it's unshielded, and then during the landing burn it's semi-shielded so that the booster can communicate with the comms array without potentially damaging it. Or just replace the comms tower entirely with Starlink antenna that are shielded with the heat shield tiles.

no the consensus is that the solar panels are still there, but they are stowed away in the new renders. in same renders you can see that there are panels that closed where the solar panels would be. sometime during the mission the panels would open up and the solar panels would come out. that said i think they could still have fuel cells too but its too early to say.
