This is a funny exaggeration but what gets actually argued is that t-rexes were pure scavengers. But this point of view also dates back to the 1920s. To some extent it's just pop-culture cherry-picking stuff that's "new"/shocking/relevant.

My favourite dietary proposal for T. rex is that it only ate the eggs of other dinosaurs.
And that all of the other dinosaurs went extinct because literally every single egg got eaten by T. rex.
And then T. rex went extinct because mammals ate every T. rex egg.

This was a legitimate suggestion that someone really made.
