it is a sad truth that one day starship will share this same fate, in 50 years, normalfags especially will look at a starship taking off and give it the same look that today's normalfags might give a commercial airliner. only spess autists and plane autists truly covet what a marvelous testament to human drive and capability they are.

Sure it's very cheap relative to other space elevator proposals, but you'll require propellants to get from Ceres to wherever you'd be going regardless - surely the benefit to it would be only very marginal and you'd be waiting quite a while for it to pay for itself.

Honestly mars is the only planet in the solar system where I see a space elevator being worth it. Earths gravity is too strong but on the moons the gravity is too weak to justify the cost of building a space elevator.
Mars is probably right in that sweet spot where building one is plausible and using rocksts is just expensive enough for a space elevator to be worth it. Also having a method for getting to orbit without expelling some of mars already thin atmosphere and sparse water is probably good for terraforming efforts.

*1- methane does replenish on Mars because we see seasonal upwellings. No idea if it exists at harvestable levels, it's just neat.
*2- water as a precursor to supply hydrogen. Could probably be lifted there if necessary, as most of the mass needed is in the co2.

The mass and orbit needs to be tuned to the elevator, using the moons as is is woefully impractical (not to mention I'm pretty sure they are balls of rubble and dust anyway). Any engineering operation to turn their mass into something useful would take a rocket infrastructure so massive you might as well rely on that instead of making an elevator that does .0001% of the work.

It will probably fly a Starlink payload in 2026-2027 but 'rapid reusability' isn't going to be ready until the 2030s.

> On Starship’s fourth flight, the top of the Super Heavy booster, commonly known as the hot-stage, was jettisoned to splash down on its own in the Gulf of Mexico. The hot-stage plays an important part in protecting the booster during separation from Starship’s upper stage before detaching during the booster’s return flight. This operation was analyzed thoroughly ahead of Starship’s fourth flight, specifically focused on any potential impact to protected marine species. Given the distribution of marine animals in the specific landing area and comparatively small size of the hot-stage, the probability of a direct impact is essentially zero. This is something previously determined as standard practice by the FAA and the National Marine Fisheries Service for the launch industry at large, which disposes of rocket stages and other hardware in the ocean on every single launch, except of course, for our own Falcon rockets which land and are reused. The only proposed modification for Starship’s fifth flight is a marginal change in the splashdown location of the hot-stage which produces no increase in likelihood for impacting marine life. Despite this, the FAA leadership approved a 60-day consultation with the National Marine Fisheries Service. Furthermore, the mechanics of these types of consultations outline that any new questions raised during that time can reset the 60-day counter, over and over again. This single issue, which was already exhaustively analyzed, could indefinitely delay launch without addressing any plausible impact to the environment.

>In May, engineers raised concerns that transistors installed throughout the spacecraft might be susceptible to damage from radiation, an omnipresent threat for any probe whipping its way around Jupiter. The transistors are embedded in the spacecraft's circuitry and are responsible for approximately 200 unique applications, many of which are critical to keeping the mission operating as it orbits Jupiter and repeatedly zooms by Europa, interrogating the frozen moon with nine science instruments.
>After four months of testing similar transistors on the ground, engineers determined the transistors on Europa Clipper could withstand the extreme radiation the spacecraft would encounter around Jupiter, without any changes to the mission's flight plan or trajectory.

Asteroid," a plush Shiba, is the "zero-g indicator" on the Polaris Dawn mission. "A zero-g indicator is a little plush toy that floats in the air. It basically shows that you are in zero-g," Liv (which she spells "L!√") Perroto, a pediatric cancer survivor who created "Asteroid" at the invitation of the Polaris Dawn crew, said in a video shared on social media. "They kind of hide it over in the corner and then once you hit zero-g, it will float up and reveal itself."

Just as Liv described, the plush puppy was seen floating at the end of its "leash" (tether) when commander Jared Isaacman, pilot Scott "Kidd" Poteet and mission specialists Sarah Gills and Anna Menon entered Earth orbit

>After setting off from Florida's Space Coast next month, Europa Clipper will reach Mars in February 2025 for a gravity assist flyby to gain speed on the journey to Jupiter. A subsequent flyby with Earth in December 2026 will bend the path of Europa Clipper to intercept Jupiter's orbit in April 2030, when the probe will fire its engine to slow down for capture by the giant planet's immense gravity field.
>Then, Europa Clipper will set itself up on a trajectory to fly by Europa 49 times over about four years, coming as close as 16 miles (25 kilometers) from the moon's icy surface. The instruments aboard Europa Clipper will map most of the moon's icy crust and search for signs that Europa's subsurface ocean of liquid water might be habitable for life. If scientists are lucky, the spacecraft could also fly through plumes erupting from Europa's surface, and these eruptions might contain pristine materials from the ocean under its icy shell. If that happens, Europa Clipper's instruments will get a taste of the chemistry of Europa's ocean.

Actually, NASA has convinced itself that radiation magically heals transistors, because by the time the probe gets to Jupiter's radiation belts, everyone in the current top ranks of NASA will have retired.

Literally demonic shit. At that point, why even bother with the human aspect at all? Just send robots to do everything and "explore" the universe for us.

The whole point of space exploration is the human side of it. The desire to explore, the desire for knowledge. The desire to EXPERIENCE it. Without humans, space exploration is meaningless. And no, your mind control VR shit doesn't count.

Even supposing you think this doesn't "count" as "real" human experience, it's probably the most effective way to allow real humans to experience it directly.

If you send cargo including germ cells or zygotes on a cargo ship that doesn't need open spaces or life support, you could use these not-humans to establish livable conditions and raise "actual" human children there. The advantage is that a much smaller ship allows for faster travel, or more exploration on the same budget.

not just that but alot only want space to be for government astronauts. i see them often idealize it as a type of star trek future, where everyone stays on earth aside from a set few government approved explorers.

there's also the environmental thing, where they think resources should focus on climate change and that space colonies will never be a good alternative to life on earth.

and then you also have alot of people who see elon as trying to create a majority white colony on mars which they see as an existential threat to their brown future.

The threat to America comes from beurocrats who are politically invested in seeing America fail (and their own beurocratic careers succeed). Only China's rise can pull America together and push it towards a goal.

We need China to land on the moon first and build their base. We need China to take South China Sea and build their nuclear fleet of carriers to push America out of East Asia. We need China to be more active and competent. Just so it would force America into more war mode mindset rather than castration mode.

Unironically speaking, and for this particular case, they'd receive some pretty hefty fines, create tons of paperwork for the FAA et al to complete, ruin any kind of good relationship they had with these agencies (if there was any left at this point), and most probably be grounded until further notice, along with some people getting arrested. Remember there was a precedent for this, I believe there were some details that needed to be completed and submitted, yet SpaceX launched anyways. They received a slap on the wrist, sure, but that's not going to be the case here. Also, the media will have a field day with this, many politicians will pick up on it, and it'll be blasted on the news: "Elon Musk's SpaceX gone rogue: rocket launches without permission".

It's interesting how in 67 years of orbital launches there's only one potential orbital launch attempt that we're really unsure existed, and if it did whether it aimed for orbit or for a suborbital trajectory (the 3rd Kaituozhe-1 launch in 2005).

We're more or less sure of the intent of early R7 launches, DF4/CZ-1 launches, Taepodong/Unha launches being either supposed to be orbital attempts or suborbital. But Kaituozhe 1 is the one exception in thousands of launches.

If the transfer between gaseous hydrogen and liquid hydrogen is a spectrum rather than a wall inside of Jupiter, how would buoyancy work? Is it just that you go kind of like a decaying graph beneath and then eventually back up until it evens out at some point? Does that mean there could be layers of planetary building materials floating around on you get to a level that is dense enough to float it like a layer or does if all sink to the bottom? So weird to think about how these all interact, and also would any movement layers in these liquid-gas levels be considered currents or gusts of wind?

https://www.nasa.gov/image-article/starship-super-heavy-breezes-through-wind-tunnel-testing-at-nasa-ames/

>During the tests, the wind tunnel forced an air stream at the Super Heavy scale model at high speeds, mimicking the air resistance and flow the booster experiences during flight. The wind tunnel subjected the Super Heavy model, affixed with pressure-measuring sensors, to wind speeds ranging from Mach .7, or about 537 miles per hour, to Mach 1.4, or about 1,074 miles per hour. Mach 1 is the speed that sound waves travel, or 761 miles per hour, at sea level.

>Engineers then measured how Super Heavy model responded to the simulated flight conditions, observing its stability, aerodynamic performance, and more. Engineers used the data to update flight software for flight 3 of Super Heavy and Starship and to refine the exterior design of future versions of the booster. The testing lasted about two weeks and took place earlier in 2024.

How well does wind tunnel testing at small scales correspond to full size? Can they just test two different small scales and extrapolate? Is the air speed "scaled" to match the model (I'm guessing that wouldn't work at all for simulating mach 1+) or do they use different air densities via different pressures or hydrogen/helium/etc.? I know lighter liquids like alcohol get used for small scale testing of things that will interact with water.

Im gonna keep developing this gas giant submersible idea. You would probably want it on Uranus as its a lighter planet meaning less pressure and also has apparantly less of a intense temperature gradient when going down. It also would have a 'slushy' layer of ices like methane, water and ammonia which would be easier to navigate than superfluid or plasma.

One question I have is if theres any real way to transmit data from below all those clouds? Im kind of stupid when it comes to telecoms but is it possible that at some wavelength it could transmit its data to an orbiter and then have the oribter send it back? Or is it just impossible for anything to happen that deep in the cloud layer.

>Fortunately, on the low-side tails, the farther you get from the line centers, the weaker the absorption is. So the lower you go in frequency, the less absorption you get. Un-fortunately, the lower you go in frequency, the less bandwidth you have for communications, so lower data rates, video resolution, etc. This is the telecom trade to be made: how deep do you need to go, what data rate do you need, what frequencies are practical (low frequencies mean larger, heavier, and clunkier components like antennas, waveguides, etc.), and how much power do you have to pump into the signal to get it out to the receiver? The more power you need, the bigger and heavier is the power supply.
So basically its possible but the lower in the atmosphere you go, the less bandwidth you have, the bulkier your craft needs to be. Fortunately Starship solves all mass autism problems as a big probe can just be assembled out there in pieces but then the question becomes at what point is the data and video feed essentially useless other than just acting as a weather balloon?

>I proposed an approach that appeared the most promising: use a staged probe, where one part deploys a big parachute and stays high in the atmosphere while another part goes deep and has to communicate only the relatively short distance to the upper part; then the upper part relays to the in-space vehicle. You can even use three or more stages. The main problem was that Jupiter's strong wind shear causes the upper one to be carried laterally far from where the deeper ones are, making the relay link deteriorate quickly. We thought of ways to tackle that, but they all involved fairly complex systems and were looked at as too risky.

So basically Jupiter a shit and doesnt have anything they could anchor a probe to due to the wind. Maybe its possible on calmer planets to readjust the relay back to position? Probably not though would still be the same issue and then also comes the question of when will it run out of fuel if using thrusters because relying on the winds of the planet to try and get back in to position is just stupid

>The suggestion of relay nodes using hot-air balloons is a version of my staged-probe method. The two main problems are the wind shear, which spreads out the stack quickly, and: you don't get much buoyancy from heating air that's mostly hydrogen. The low molecular mass is a big problem, one that requires heating a large mass of air. The more air you try to heat, the larger (and heavier) the balloon envelope gets, and the more heat you have to supply due to convection and radiation losses. Many years ago I did a related calculation: using 238-Pu (the same isotope they use in NASA RTGs as the heat souce), how big does a Pu-heated jovian balloon have to be to support its own weight and the weight of the Pu? Using the highest strength-to-weight-ratio materials available at the time, it finally converged at a balloon radius of some 30 km, and needing mega-tons of Pu. And that's without any payload!

30 KILOMETER RADIUS WITH NO PAYLOAD. Yeah Jovian cloud cities are never happening.

Dont jet engines require oxygen for combustion? Not sure how thats different for nuclear ones, but factor in that and the low atmospheric density due to it being mostly hydrogen as stated above I would think that it sinks like a rock no? It would also be fighting almost 3Gs at all time.

Dang so probes would be REALLY hard to develop, you would need a probe, relay and in-space satellite to receive and send back low quality data that is constantly fighting intense winds, pressure and temperature. Or, you could try and run a massive balloon that is dozens if not hundreds or thousands of kilometers in radius that need to be heated by RTGs and the larger you get the less return you get due to heat radiating away at a faster pace due to the increasing surface area. I can see why it hasnt been done yet, forget the submersible even just atmospheric data is ROUGH to transmit back. The submersible probe also needs to fight an ionized atmosphere to transmit data back which is basically impossible,

>But it gets even worse. The deeper you get, the hotter it gets. At some point (roughly 1000-1500 K) the combination of temperature and pressure is enough to ionize some of the atmospheric constituents, so the atmosphere becomes highly electrically conductive. It's like trying to transmit through metal! Even with @uh-oh's VLF or ELF.

So you need other methods of communication for that which he also discussed and will put below.

Will Polaris Dawn hold the record for largest number of individuals exposed to the hard vacuum of space at one time? Trying to think of scenarios in which more than two crew members are on EVA for any one mission and am drawing a blank for that. Yes the other two crew members won't be getting out of their seats but all four are exposed to hard vacuum. Main reason they aren't all gonna go outside and float around is ergonomic imo.

>The question and comments have mentioned non-electromagnetic means of telecom. Sound isn't very useful, as @AJN says, because it looks like Jupiter's atmosphere is one giant, complex storm. The noise level would be very high, meaning that to get a useful signal-to-noise ratio ('SNR') you'd have to put a lot of power into the sound. @James suggested gravitational waves, but sometime down the line ... way down the line ... way, way down the line! Let me know when I can buy a gravitational-wave generator of useful output that's smaller and lighter than a neutron star! A receiver, too, much smaller, lighter, and more sensitive than LIGO. Most particle-based schemes (like neutrons) also suffer from the dense atmosphere, as @Jon Custer alludes to: the mean free path ('MFP') in the deep atmosphere is short compared to the propagation pathlength needed to get out of the atmosphere. Neutrinos have much longer MFPs but have some of the same problems as gravitational-wave schemes: practical systems need to be much smaller and lighter than Super-Kamiokande.

So the only even feasible systems for transmitting data at the deepest of depths is maybe neutrinos but not really because of mass. BUUUUUUT mass problems are solved by many many Starships, and it seems like mass autism is the main driver of why some solutions we have come up with dont work. So the best option we have for atmospheric observations is some sort of probe that can stay afloat in one spot on a calmer planet that autonomosly stays in place within range of a relat, or a massive fucking hot air balloon that is bigger than cities for a rinky dink probe that we have to hope doesnt get ripped up by the high wind speeds. And for 'submersible' probes its basically impossible in our life times unless we get a neutrino detector all the way out there in orbit around Jupiter and put a nuclear reactor on that satellite. Could the RTG be used to transmit data or would it be a separate thing?

>After 47 years, a fuel tube inside the thrusters has become clogged with silicon dioxide, a byproduct that appears with age from a rubber diaphragm in the spacecraft’s fuel tank. As other posters have eluded to, there are many considerations that must be accounted for when doing sub scale testing. You need to size your model relative to your test chamber so it does not interact with the boundary layer that forms on the walls of the tunnel.

Additionally as another poster already mentioned, you match the Reynolds number. This is typically most easily done by varying the air velocity, as this is what is easiest to control in the tunnel. For some applications to get the Reynolds number you need, you will want to change the air density. Typically we just adjust for the ambient temperature, but for some testing you may condition the air or wait to test when the temperature is high or low enough depending on your need. The extreme end of this is using a non air gas in a close loop tunnel. You can use helium for lower density, or sulfur hexafloride for increased density.

After testing there are some corrections you can apply, but this has its limits.
