Sup, /sci/? I figured you knew about model organisms, so I have a question. I've got a bit of a fruit fly problem and they seem to be really attracted to beer empties. I also have a fresh bourbon poured and they keep trying to get into it. I've got traps set up, so it should be solved soon, but why are they after my booze? Are they just underage or do they enjoy delicious, delicious ethanol?

You wouldn't have that problem with Mike's Hard Lemonaid.

Because it has no ethanol content? (5%abv LOL)

Smells like rotting

Yes he would. The problem would be Mike's Hard lemonade.

Uh.. as long as those aren't escaped Drosophila melanogaster from an experiment (which would be a far bigger issue in of itself), I don't see why you'd have qualms with just killing them all to get rid of said problem.

They like sugar, obviously. There is a lot of sugar in beer and a fair amount in wine. Wine is pretty noticeable in smell as well and so even if they're not keen on it, they go and investigate because it very strongly smells delicious to them.

Oh, I dont give a fuck about killing them. I killed generations in my intro genetics lab (badass here). I figured it was WT revenge or they couldn't find anyone to buy beer for them.

That, or they're fruit flies. And wine smells like really concentrated... fruit. Beer is just really sweet and often has a fruity smell to it as well. Lastly because lots of fallen fruit have some fermentation going on, the ethanol smell is nothing at all unusual to the flies.

Flies don't have a sense of smell. Not in the same way we do anyway

Makes sense. Thank you, /sci/!
